Do most schools, public or private, require new teachers to attend an orientation prior to starting a new position? If so, how long do these usually last (1 week? 2 weeks?)? Will this likely be spelled out in the initial contract or will I have to ask each potential employer about this? |

by "private" do you mean hagwon? If yes, then the answer is no. You will likely be taken straight from the airport to work and be standing in front of a classroom within hours of landing.
by "public" do you mean private recruitment to a public school job (then see hagwon) or going through something like EPIK? IF EPIK then orientation is normal, lasts for about a week and will be a requirement of employment (you'll know before you go).

Thanks. So does that mean that working for a public school only requires an orientation if I go through EPIK or one of the other government sponsored programs? Using a recruiter to get a job at a public school is different? |

IF you are hired directly by the (public) school (through a recruiter) then orientation is unlikely.
If the recruiter just feeds into EPIK/GEPIK/etc then orientation at some point is probable (Gyeonggi province often holds a "training session" for teachers who have not taken an "orientation" as part of their intake into Korea.
