|

My friend left his smartphone in a taxi while coming to work this morning. It had all his contacts and important work related files. Worst part is it is in silent phone and doesn't even vibrate. Is there any way to get it back?
(He has been calling the phone whole day but no one's picking it up. Apparently, once in the afternoon, someone cut off his call while it was ringing as well) |

He should report it to his carrier immediately, but recovery is really hit or miss depending on the taxi driver.
There's allegedly a black market where lost smartphones are sold to smugglers who expunge internal memory and ship them off to China or SE Asia or who-knows-where. Taxi drivers are known to be key suppliers to this black market, and any suspension imposed by the Korean carrier becomes meaningless once the hardware is shipped offshore. |

Apparently the phone was not turned off for the whole day, so I am hopping we can get it back if we could just get in contact with the driver somehow. Assuming the driver the willing to return it if he meets us, is there anything we can do? Anything at all? I will greatly appreciate any help or ideas on this. |

It's gone. If the driver wanted to return it, he would've picked up by now. |

Tell your friend to sober up next time he gets in a taxi. |

Send a text to the phone in Korean. Say you'll pay 50k or whatever for the return of it. I'm not sure how useful a stolen phone would be in Korea since it can be blocked from accessing the network. |

Yea that will get the perpetrator to meet OP in person. What is this amateur detective hour? |

If you can remote install apps, add one called "lost droid finder" (if it's an android of course). By sending text code words, it will up the volume to max and ring for 3 minutes, and let you know when the ringet stops. It will also send you the gps location of the phone. If someone adds a new sim, it wil send a contact of your choice the new phone number so you can ring the person and let them know they are a bad person. If anyone else has a droid, i suggest installing a similar app just in case. My friend lost his phone last week, and we found it due to this app. |
