Hello all you very friendly and helpful people!
I'll be living and working in Yeoksam-dong pretty soon.

So if you've been there at all, what do you think?

Is it as cosmopolitan and 'uppity' as stereotypes would have you think?

Could you yourself live there for a year?

What stuck out to you about it?

Any recommendations, warnings, or praises for the area?

Thanks so much!

I met someone at a cafe in Gangnam, it was their first time outside their country and teaching at a hagwon in Gangnam with a small officetel right at gangnam station, and they had no idea, they didnt really like their job, and I was like 99% of the first timers here would KILL for your job, and you just lucked out.

Its a cool place man. Kind of like downtown Chicago.

Gangnam is a dump. Just a bunch of sterile looking buildings, wide lanes, gold diggers with their LV bags that think they can buy class, and their dorky Bean Pole-wearing walking ATM boyfriends. 90% of the people in Gangnam look like this (the other 10% are in suits going to work). If you think Gangnam is exciting you've clearly never visited Tokyo (Shimokitazawa/Yoyogi), NYC (Union Square/Village), hell even Hongdae right here in Seoul has more interesting looking people than Gangnam. I guess the people raving about Gangnam haven't traveled the world extensively like I have and don't care for culture. I dread when my smoking hot girlfriend wants to head out for Gangnam for the night and I have to stare at plastic people that all dress exactly the same all night.

Lived and worked there.

Overrated IMO. Just date a few of these "hotties" and over time you'll see there isn't a whole lot of variety.

Virtually all of Gangnam has the Korean hunk of concrete look.

I rented a room in a rich family's home in Gangam. Although it was worth over a million dollars it could have passed as being subsidized/goverment housing in America/Canada.

In Canada my family was never rich, but I came upon a few rich people/families in my life. They valued hard work and (although they no doubt operated with a flexible morality with regards to their self interest) they tried to be as honest as they could. From my experience those in Gangnam (and Korea wide) who make this attempt are viewed as being suckers or just plain weird.

The family I lived with must have watched as much TV as an obese Alabama farmer.

Except that you can't afford them on a Hakwon salary.

You have to learn to be more creative. Those hotties don't want money. They make enough bank. Those angels want something the other girls don't have. A 6'4" hunk of a white man from a calendar with blue or hazel eyes that is well hung and has nothing to do with 'the business'.

Kind of like a side-play toy.

The most important thing? Pronouncing Gangnam properly.
