Looks like Geomonronin has a friend on his videoblog now. Sort of like an interviewer.
Here Geomonronin gives details of his homelessness. He was reduced to sleeping on the streets on his return to the US.

Scary and fascinating video. |

Careful Creeper, this guy worked in China because he doesn't have a degree. You might end up encouraging more back packers to head out your way (not Korea) if you expose them to this. Not what you want is it? |
A TEFL Certificate with some initiative to learn grammer is more important than a Bachelor's when it comes to teaching unless the Bachelor's is in Education or possibly English. The one good thing about requiring college degrees, which is I think what you're talking about, is it helps to separate the louts from quality people, although looking at this website sometimes you have to wonder.
Actually come to think of it when I taught in Thailand, the school I taught at had lots of un-degreed teachers that were not so bad at teaching, some possibly better than me, however I have never seen a school with so many louts and racists. |
There has to be some standard. I assume they want people that are educated. There are a lot of smart people without degrees. But, if they want to teach overseas, then they should make the sacrifice and get a degree. I did and have the debt that follows with it. But, I wish that business degrees would get recognition in this too. Since you have to write a lot of reports and give many presentations. Your business professors will come down hard on grammar and spelling errors much more so than they will in the arts.
Teaching adults, business English, and even understanding PPT, writing, and giving presentations can be useful skills here. Most English majors study literature in University. They will not be teaching any of this in ESL. So, I can't see how it's of any use here. Education degrees definately can help prepare for teaching methods. But, I have seen some certified teachers struggle with Korean educational culture and being an "assistant teacher".
The point is none of us are necessarily prepared to do ESL, though TESOLs and CELTAs and the like can be useful. It's our own energy, experience, inner drive, creativity, etc that make for successful ESL teachers. That said, most of us are here for the cash. When the cash dissppears, so will most of the teachers. |

There is life after TEFL, but the sooner you get started, the better. I'm thinking many who have taught for years in Korea or Asia have done so because of a sense of security in a relatively comfortable situation and fear of change. |

Probably. Just don't go home planning to live in your parents' basment hoping it'll all work out. Got to A) have high cash reserves and B) have a plan. (Guess I should add C) make sure you're debt free, but that one should be obvious.) |

Judge for yourselves if you'd like to be in this situation. |

That guy is kinda weird but for some reason I like to watch his videos. I think there was one video where he was living with his girlfriend and her kids or something and he was explaining in detail how they could only have sex in the shower because the kids were always around and they had no privacy. I dont know why I kept watching it, I can only imagine what his GF looks like. |

Maybe you can link that video.. I have watched a lot of his videos and never seen one with him describing that. Pretty good solution to having no privacy though
I am pretty sure he is single now however. |

His pride is in his way... he can't understand how people would ever want to make a permanent living abroad. Making 7-10/hr working 20 hours a week and being a hobo in your native country makes more sense to him.. All the power to you if you share the same beliefs. |

I am doing just fine in Canada right now. I taught in Korea in 2009.
It depends on your educational/professional background I guess. Mine is in accounting.
I am coming back to Korea though! But, its not because I am an economic refugee! I have wanted to come back ever since I left in 2010. |

Jeez, that guy is depressing. Living in a room with a dog, losing his voice, working for minimum wage, and on top of that his lips are falling apart!
Is it just me, or does he kind of look like a beat-up Jon Lovitz? |
