| Let me add that I think Seoul will always pay less than other places as so many want to be there. |

| I know it's an employers market these days, but this whole groveling "I'll take whatever you can spare" attitude drives salaries even lower than they need to be. Have a little pride, people! Attitudes like the ones described above hurt other employees too as that becomes the new standard. Just because YOU are happy to get whatever experimental new lowball figure they offer, doesn't mean everyone else is. |
I couldn't agree more.

Honestly, salaries have not gone up here for E2 holders since 2005...but the cost of food, gas, electric, and water sure as hell have...the only thing that has gone down is the won! No joke...do the research... |

| This industry is degenerating slowly but surely; more and more jobs offer lower and lower pay, and more and more greasy Canadians willing to take 'em. lol, just kidding I love Canadians. Seriously I have been around the block and I can still find the sweet jobs but it is a lot tougher, a lot tougher! I feel a bit sad when I think back to the early to mid 2000's. We have almost the same (or shrinking pay) yet taxi rates have tripled and everything else has doubled in price. Sad indeed. |

| My rural area is starting to combine positions. My position is going to be combined with another one next year making it five schools (2 HS and 3 MS). It's mine if I want it since I'm the senior teacher...but no. Just no. The travel distance is like going from one end of Seoul to the other and a different place every day...whoever has this spot next year - God bless 'em. |

| In 2008 I got 2.1 and I was happy to get it. Studio apartment was a great part of the deal. I don't think getting 200k more or less would make a difference. |

| I have a DREAM JOB here in Korea. I work less than uni teachers and get paid more as well. I've also been given not one, but TWO pay raises since I've been here. It's true every other teacher is making peanuts in this country except me. But if you know how to negotiate, that's all that matters. I told my employer what I wanted to make if I was going to re-sign, no ifs ands or buts. They promptly agreed both times without question as they need me more than I need them. It's good to be me. |
lol, like anyone believes that. nice try troll |

^ This is EXACTLY the attitude that hurts salaries here.
"2.1? Sure, if you can spare it for little old me. But actually, 200k more or less doesn't make much difference anyway."
"Really? Ok. How about 1.9?"
"Sure, I could live off that I guess."
"Really? Then actually we can only afford to pay you 1.7. Is it OK??"
"Sure. Thanks so much."
"No problem. Also, I'm renting your apartment out and pocketing the money. Please understand. But you can stay in the closet at the school. Ok?"
"Uhhh...."

I agree with you Mix1. Talk about setting the bar low. The guy must be a real couch potato. |

| Or maybe he realizes there are more important things than money? Novel idea. I'd prefer to work a job I like for 2.1 than a crappy job for 2.3. All about priorities. |

A lot of places that are willing to low-ball like that may also provide crappy work conditions and other problems down the road. You can have a job you like AND get paid a decent salary. No need to accept chump change and be glad you got the hand out. People need to have a little more pride. It's not charity work.
Money will start to become more important when you have LESS of it. And teachers will have a lot less money if attitudes like the above prevail. These attitudes effect the entire pay range in the industry itself. If they can lower the base, they can lower everything else. Thanks, but no thanks. |

You can't keep getting worked up about salaries getting lower. There are just too many native English speakers with BAs out there. 1.8 with a 1 room is still better than $14/hr in a call center.
Heck, people take 220,000 yen WITHOUT HOUSING to live and teach in Japan.
Insulate yourself from this crap. Retrain. GET OUT of ESL (that includes uni esl). Get into assessment or SOMETHING that has some kind of barrier to entry. Jesus man, help yourselves. |

I wouldn't accept anything lower, I'm merely saying I was paid enough that it didn't matter at the time.
I haven't worked in SK for nearly 4 years. I freed up a spot for someone else so I could live in Australia and get 120k/year. Your welcome. |
