U.S. newspaper criticizes Korea

U.S. newspaper criticizes Korean work culture

The death rate of Korean workers is twice as high as that of American workers, U.S. newspaper The Atlanta Journal reports.

The front-page article says Korean employees are expected to work on weekends without extra pay, no matter which country they are working in.

Koreans work more than 2,000 hours a month, the report says.

The paper says the situation is because of Korea’s performance-oriented culture and lack of communication between workers and bosses.

“American companies emphasize family over work and people over money, so they have a hard time understanding Korean work culture,” the paper quotes a Korean company employee in Atlanta as saying.

“No matter how many times we try to tell our superiors in Korea that we are working to American values, it is hard to convince them because of their performance-oriented mindset.”

They might BE IN THE OFFICE FOR 2,000 hours a month but do they do any work? Debatable.

I think the death rate is due to horrible bosses, a retarded corporate culture and just utter stupidity in the workplace.

The fact that it was in a Georgia newspaper tells me a lot.

My closest Korean bud works 9:30 to 12AM every day. Then on the weekends if there is a concert, he has to go and manage.

Yes- link is dead. Obviously they meant 200 and KT took the article down when they realized their own blunder. The AJC is a fairly decent paper, and it's unfair to criticize them (for being southern) since 99% of US papers get international stories from the AP or a wire service. Shoot the messenger.

200 hours a month even is exaggerated. Stop counting after work hour excursions and this number falls drastically. And let's be honest here, work productivity isn't exactly at the top end of the scale.

Are you sure about this? Simple exaggeration? You and Yaya might have been thinking of some other earth that has a 66 hour day.

Of course with the "4 seasons a year and lunar calendar adjustments " cleverly put forth by the Cosmic Hum, maybe we are talking about some type of time-warp on the peninsula.

Yeah, just noticed that and changed my response right before you posted. My stance reamins.

200 hours was what it should have said right?

If not, I.m pleading to the courts that anything I've said or done should be dismissed due to alcohol consumption.

Fair enough. Alcohol is a tried and true defense for anything here on the time-warp peninsular.

Oh lord, that was a good one.

Curious as to what "worker death rate" means. People of working age's death rate? Death rate while on the job? I sincerely have no idea.

Anyway, just one example. My CT came in to our school over a recent holiday to "finish some work". Funny, I had already finished that 'work' (it took me about an hour). Also, I'm not making this up, she was asleep at her desk for at least 2 hours before final bell the day before the holiday. Just like how my students study 10 hours a day yet still can't write letters properly on their tests. Like everything, grain of salt with these "stats".
