having bought a place outright in a rather nice Spanish city.

Do you rent it out when you're in the ME? How easy is it and do you go through an agency etc..? I was thinking of buying a place in Spain too but am a bit worried about this and also the dodgy property laws. What's your take on it?

The argument is never that esl/efl is going to go away. It's here to stay and will grow further. However as the industry becomes more dollars and cents based, and more people grab MA TESOLs, wages will stagnate if not decline. That has certainly been the trend since the 'good ole days' 20 years ago. Why would this trend reverse itself?

There seems to be a universal trend for job conditions of people in work to stagnate/slowly decline while the elite gets richer. This might apply to TEFL too. However there are always mini peaks and troughs in an industry, where a country latches onto a trend and everyone wants to get involved - like Korea a few years ago - an emerging country suddenly has cash to splash on a government project or a big rich company suddenly decides it needs a training program. If you're well qualified and prepared to travel, TEFL will continue to provide people with good pay and conditions for a while yet.

Agreed, Indonesia will be the next country to partake in such a programme, that is a bold prediction of mine, or maybe Vietnam. English has won the language war and our services aren't dwindling anytime soon.

I don't, the wife and mum live there, we don't have to rent it out thankfully but you could if you wanted to and it would be easy enough to get an estate agent to look after the place and pick the right tenants etc.

In regards the property laws, keep away from Andalusia and coastal properties where a lot of illegal buildings have been built. If you buy in a city outside of Andalucia - you won't have that problem but of course the best thing to do is to research everything and bring in your own surveyors and lawyers - a good place to go is to the Britishexpats site where it is a mine of information about the buying process in Spain. Here is a British government website which is very useful.

https://www.gov.uk/how-to-buy-property-in-spain

I would recommend it though, you can live quite well in Spain teaching English if you take away the rent/mortgage aspect.

PS: There is a Spanish govt website in which you can check out if a property you are interested in is legally built or not. But I would recommend it despite the risks - go for it, prices are rock bottom and nice places are going for a song.

65000 pounds, right near the beach in Gijon. Pay the cost of that off and you can live on the wages no problems and have a nice life. Something we all want. Very Happy

That place is cheap but looks terrible. Just a small concrete box with an outside view of a brick wall.

What do you expect for 79,000 euro? That literally wouldn't get you a garden shed in London

It doesn't look that bad. Looks modern enough and better than the one rooms many waygooks get here in Korea. What are the ESL wages in Spain then? Would there be enough work in the same place?

You are 5 minutes from the beach and Gijon is one of the nicest cities in Spain. If you have bought your place then you could live well on the wages. I think it is three bedrooms so it is bigger than you might think. There is teaching work all over Spain and if you are legal you can do privates, extra work, no CRC, medical, annual visas etc.

A seafront property in the city centre of Gijon, I don't know many places on the planet where such a place would go that cheap, one of those changing sheds in Southend on Sea in Essex was being sold for 100000 pounds and the damn thing is made of wood. Laughing

Two things, the first is, it is made of wood and PVC and the second is that it is in Texas - I will stick with bricks and mortar in Gijon thanks! Very Happy
