I saw those fools in Itaewon last night. What a joke. After initially reading this post I thought they were just there to provide information for tourists, but after reading the new posts I now understand that they are actually police officers. It is so stupid that I am utterly baffled by the thinking process involved. Was there noon in the development stage who spoke up and said this idea was retarded? Do they even understand the concept of a police force. For Christ's sake, policing and the promotion of K-pop tourism are not the same friggin thing. Indeed, few things in life are conceptually further apart than these two things. What Korea needs is a real effective police force, not another klownish diversion away from law enforcement. K-kops were a joke before this new development, now they are just beyond laughable. |

The purpose of these officers is to make them appealing to tourists. They aren't meant to be hardcore gang-busting cops. If you can't see the value in making police created for tourists more friendly and approachable while capitalizing on the popularity of Gangnam Style among said target group, then you are the one who is a fool, not them.
You need to loosen up a bit. Just because you have some intense dislike of Korea doesn't mean that the people visiting here do. Quite the opposite, I'd imagine. |

Is your family from China, Japan, or Thailand? I'm guessing not. Most Westerners would rather visit the more well-known (to Westerners) countries, such as Japan and Thailand. Consequently, the number of Western tourists in Korea is fairly low. But that doesn't mean that there aren't millions of Asians coming to visit the nation.
My family visited me here in Seoul a few years ago. They didn't have any particular desire to come to Korea but ended up having a great time anyway. Seoul is a good place to visit if you know where to go. |
And this is a load of BS.
Seouls "things to do" are largely second rate, dumps compared to what the rest of Asia has to offer. IPIC's II Law: If you think Korea is a good place to visit, you're either a Koreaboo or you haven't traveled Asia extensively.
Namsan Tower? Garbage compared to the Tokyo Skytree
63 Building? Garbage compared to Taipei 101
Seoul's overpriced department stores? Garbage compared to Tsim Sha Tsui in Hong Kong
Seoul's ugly concrete jungle skyline? See the city above.
Itaewon? **holds back from laughter** Garbage compared to Khao San Road, where you can actually meet interesting people (not bald ESL losers that have been in Korea a decade and don't speak a word of the language) and you can eat Pad Thai for a dollar which tastes better than any garbage street food Korea has to offer.
Yeouido Park? Garbage compared to Yoyogi Park in Tokyo.
Gyeongbokgung? Garbage compared to the Forbidden City.
I could go on and on but I think I've proved my point.
Those "millions" of Asians you're point out by the way.... well I'll put it this way: Upper middle class and wealthy Americans go on trips to Mexico because it's cheap for them and they have tons of money to blow. That's basically what the Chinese and Japanese are doing for Korea. None of them "like" this dump they just have more money than they know what to do with. Just go to Myeongdong and watch them overpay for everything in sight or blow their money at the casinos in Jeju if you don't believe me. |
I don't think you're making a fair comparison. You compared Seoul to Tokyo, Taipei, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Beijing all at once, picking the best offerings from each city and comparing them all just to Seoul. I do agree that Seoul doesn't have the best of anything you've listed in Asia. Toyko has a better tower, Hong Kong has a better skyline, the Forbidden City is way better than any of the Korean palaces. But still, the fact that Seoul still offers so much -- and that most of the offerings are decent, if not the best -- is still impressive and can make for a good vacation here.
And, as I've written many times, most of the Asian tourists do come for shopping. Seoul has a lot of shopping options right around the city center, which, well, at least some people enjoy. A good number of Asian tourists come here for Korean food, too, especially the Japanese tourists. And it's not like I'm just making this up. Since I live in live right in the heart of the city, I've met tourists from Beijing, Singapore, Hong Kong, etc. Some of them were here for their second trip to Seoul. They all liked it for various reasons ranging from the shopping, the food, the sites, etc.
Many of the tourists sites in Seoul have positive reviews on TripAdvisor, which you can see here:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g294197-d2011401-Reviews-Shinsegae_Dept_Store_Main-Seoul.html
But these people must be idiots for liking Seoul, because it's not better than all the other major Asian cities in every way, right?

I have to agree with some of these statements. Koreans talking about "foreign tourists" coming here for the shopping are clueless when it comes to Tsim Sha Tsui in Hong Kong. Not only is there a larger selection of brands and styles, but no overinflated import tax. Also, Yeouido Park? Try going to Victoria Park in Hong Kong. Now, THAT is a good place to spend a lazy afternoon. |
Foreign tourists do not have to pay duties. They shop at the Duty Free shops. The fact is LOTS of tourists come to Seoul to shop. Most of them, I'd wager. Just go to Myeongdong and the nearby Shinsaegae and Lotte Department stores. |

The fact that you just linked to a review of a Korean department store to convince me Seoul is a good place to visit is all I need to see.
You should work for the Korean government. They can use a great mind like you to drop the GS Police unit and replace it with a "Come to our overpriced Department Stores (we got a good review on Trip Advisor!)" campaign.
Im now 100% certain youve never seen Tsim Sha Shui. If you had traveled there youd laugh at the idea of comparing them to the Lottes and Shinsegaes in Seoul. IPICs II law still stands. |

Utter drivel/rubbish/clap trap/bs.
I have family and friends that have been to SEVERAL "less well known" countries. AND YEAH, even less well known than South Korea.
They just came to their own conclusions, that Korea wasn't worth visiting/spending a dime of travel money on. I neither agreed or disagreed with them.
Thankfully, they did have an awesome time in both Thailand and Japan though. |

Itaewon already has those 'Can we help you?' tourist people walking around (in red coats and hats). If they wanted to dress anyone up like Psy it could be them. But why even do that? Is Psy now the face of Korea? Is this how they are marketing themselves? Don't they realize that he 's seen overseas as a mildly-entertaining buffoon. Honestly, they don't want to their national brand tied too closely to that character. So getting those tourist helper people to dress up like him would be a bad move. But what they've done is gone and had their friggin police force dressed up like this. The police are an arm of the state, one which has on occasion power over life or death. Policing is serious business, and it is the height of absurdity to have any of its members dressed up like a dancing buffoon. (What's next, Canadian cops getting Justin Bieber haircuts? It's that stupid.)
And let's remember that this guy had ranted onstage about wanting to kill American soldiers and their wives and children - slowly. In a normal society he would have been investigated by the police for incitement to hatred. In Korea, the cops decide he's such a swell guy that they decide to walk around, on duty, dressed in sparkly blue jackets and caps. "Hi, we're dressed like Psy, can we help you." It's just insane.
And how the hell are tourists supposed to identity them as cops? "Oh my god, that woman is being attacked. Quick, look for someone dressed up as a chubby pop star."
Madness. |
