I couldnt believe how many of my students were freaked out about this. They all described the red mask differently, but they were all sure it would be out roaming between 7pm and midnight. This had my last class (that ends at 7pm) terrified. My kids had no idea what the gender of the red mask is. And most agreed only Children get targeted.
Surely their parents would dispel this ridiculous myth and free these kids from crippling fear. Talk about living in the dark ages.
But after realizing my credibility with the kids is obviously zilch, and the little buggers actually argued with me about it – of course taking the word of their 8-year-old friend over mine, I thought of an interesting way to spend the evening. Perhaps it would be fun to paint a big red clown smile on my face and prance around my neighborhood in blue pants and red shirt, peering into the windows of young school kids . |

It's all the rage. I have heard from all the kids today about it and still don't know what the hell they were talking about. I've also heard its to promote a candy of some sort. |

She can't touch boys.
The traditional Korean candy (the guys that dance with scissors). Makes you immune.
She can't go above the second floor.
You have to draw the chinese symbol for dog on your palm and say the word 3 times.
She is very fast on her feet.
A certain flavoured jelly also makes you immune.
She is travelling the country and apparently being aided in her schedule by Korean T.V.
She is Korean but the surgery happened in Japan in 1990.
She is around 20ish, quite the fox I'm told. |

Is this because boys are smarter and know not to believe in this? |

Teacher's Day is the 15th.
I asked my university-aged students about the Red Mask ghost, and they said the same story went around when they were young. Apparently, back then, the way to scare her off was to say "God".
They also told me about the 666 man. He was supposed to catch children when they were alone and burn "666" into their foreheads, which would turn them into demons. If you're feeling particularly evil, you could try spreading that one among your students. |
I was on the 666 bus in Gwangju and it crashed into two cars. I wonder if he was at the wheel? |

One student told me that 3 students were found with slit throats in different parts of the city of Pyeongtaek, of all places. I didn't think much of it until I heard from my adult friend in Pohang, of all places, that he heard about something about Pyeongtaek involving 4 kids. And he mentioned that before I mentioned my Pyeongtaek story.
Could be just coincidence and rampant rumor-mongering. |

Just so you'll recognize her if she approaches you, here is her picture:
and here is the Chinese symbol for dog:
Inexhile, in which language are we supposed to say dog three times?
In Korean, it's .
In Japanese, it's inu.
I don't know what it is in Chinese. |

according to my boyfriend these things come up every couple years or so.
there used to be a "hong kong grandma" or hong kong halmoni who steals kids off to hong kong...her husband's name is "basket grandpa"....apparently, the kids still know this one. ask them about it. |

It must be the chinese word for dog as it wasn't the korean or Japanese that they repeated to me. Although the fad is (its lie teacher, its lie) over, I still noticed a few younger students with the symbol on their palm.
We must start a crazed rumour about the evil esl teacher. Its a fantastic idea!!!, We have the Board to make sure it kicks off at the same time in different locals. What a way to spread a meme, sociologists would be dissecting it for years.
Of course I don't want to give little kids nightmares, but there must be someway of pulling off the great esl hoax.
