Hi, i might be going to South Korea soon for work and I am trying to find some information about ways to get to learn South Korea a bit better. I hope this is the correct place for this post..
I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers about channels that provide the news. I am looking for some divers channels to broaden my knowledge. Could you guys tell me what the South Korean sources are? Like for instance, a South Korean newspaper a bit similar to the NY Times or USA Today is....
I am trying to soak up as much info as possible to get a head start  Could anyone fill in this list for me?
Newspapers
- Serious newspaper: in USA: New York Times. In South Korea you have...?
- Large sensational newspaper: USA Today or The Sun. In South Korea you have...?
TV
- Serious news program: In USA: Charlie Rose or Meet the Press. In South Korea you have...?

I presume you mean in english?
You're not going to find a NYT equivalent. Heres a pretty complete rundown of online rags. http://www.world-newspapers.com/southkorea.html
None really stand out from the others. None really offer the same news as Koreans are consuming. They do address big national issues but otherwise skew towards promoting Korea to foreigners. Nothing in-depth. But you can at least glean some hint of current major issues.
TV & radio, forget it.

You could do a lot worse than soaking up www.koreannewsfeeds.com
It is basically a collection of the main Korean news agencies with a good few other bits n pieces thrown in.. |

| Yes, i found that one. Now i am just trying to get into the actual korean culture a bit by watching television shows and trying to read the correct newspapers. Are there any korean ones that represent an example of the list? |

조선/중앙/동아 are right-wing/conservative newspapers, while 경향/한겨레 are left-leaning.
News articles in Korea are predominantly consumed through 'portal sites' such as Daum, Nate, or Naver. You can think of Yahoo News to get the gist of it.
SBS is the most critical of current administration among 3 major national broadcasters, MBC's board is under indirect control of President Park, KBS is always pro-government whichever party rules. YTN claims to be modeled after CNN or Associated Press, but they're also mostly pro-administration.

I find that news source pro-Korea, almost propaganda. Similar to Arirang. It's seems like a govt. mouthpiece. |

Funny, I feel your recommended sources are pretty out there on a number of issues. The Joongang is in Samsung's pocket, and the Hanky has its nose so far up the North's arse, it's a wonder they can breathe.

^^ Yeah, that's true. JoonAng was founded by Samsung. I remember they argued that Samsung president should be pardoned a few years ago, after it found they had used a slush fund to bribe officials. It was such a slanted article. But on non-Samsung stuff I find it's stuff on society pretty good.

| The best choices for news you will have will be the internet. Most of the local papers in English suck. In terms of finding TV shows either streaming or downloading. Many of the US sites are blocked and the only way you can stream is with a VPN or through an alternative source like a website that has streaming channels. |

For social stuff, I link the Joongahn. But if it's ever related to samsung or apple, they're totally biased.
Agreed that the Hanky is good for taking an anti-corporate stance on issues... but for political stuff, they're just too glaringly left for me. The North would bomb something in the South, and the Hanky would blame the South. 
I feel like i have to scour the k-news sites for all the info, just to glean what's possibly the truth. |
