Koreans who are easily offended and incensed at the slightest unflattering portrayal of Korea in international media are shocked and baffled why Africans would be incensed at Korean-made cigarette ads portraying Africans as monkeys.

Ajoshie and ajumma should think twice before mocking the appearances and behaviors of other ethnic groups. I was going up the subway escalator the other day and the ajumma in front of me was cleaning out the left ear of her ajoshie with her finger (then flicking it away). He then turns around so she can clean out the other one. It was, for me, very much an 'Animal Planet moment'. And I won't even get started on the physiology of Koreans over 50 years old, the squatting (humans shouldn't squat), the table manners, and the various animal sounds ajoshie is fond of making. Before saying that Africans remind them of monkeys they should take a good look in the mirror. They're nothing special themselves.

Perfect timing.

We were in Gangnam this weekend seeing a movie, and saw these smokes in the 7-11...couldn't believe it. Haha, just seemed so wrong.

They're a decent smoke. Rich, yet mellow flavor. A little light on the nicotine. But the second I saw the poster I knew that that was going to be trouble.

I'll never forget the time I walked into the Incheon restroom and all I could hear was people hacking up mucus and grunting on the toilet. It sounded like some grotesque musical going on in the restroom.

Other than that, I have had many students write in essays that they hate black skin people because they have black skin.

You can't make that stuff up.

But I do like the effort in trying to blame foreigners. One Spanish graphic deseigner who probably just made the picture without any context and a Korean magazine.

I also enjoy the non-apology and the "It's not me, it's you" tone of their statement. I'm not into overly PC stuff, but for a country so obsessed with how others perceive them, and so easily offended when you might not eat 8 lbs of kimchi at lunch, Koreans generally seem to be very insensitive to the feelings of other nationalities and races. If you're going to dish it out, you really should be able to take it yourselves.

And this piece of hypocrisy from the Joonang Daily.

The whole article seemed... off.

Quote:
“We as Africans are still a minority against a multitude of pure Koreans
I'm pretty sure the author inserted the word "pure" in there.

Quote:
Describing a monkey as human is “blatantly racist and depreciative”
That just reads funny to me. As in, it's racist to the monkey Smile

Quote:
said an official from an international organization, who didn’t want his or his group to be named.

Quote:
designers from Korean fashion magazine Cracker Your Wardrobe.
Lol.

Quote:
“I actually had a positive image of the company thanks to Sangsang Madang and other social projects associated with youth before.

Sounds like the author just made up the quote, to let all of the readers know that there are positive things that the company does.

I was wondering when Id hear about a rebuttal. Those have been in the shops for a bit now.

Also, the article is weird. Insert the word Pure and make Korea seem bigger/more/stronger/etc than the CONTINENT of Africa, check. Blame a foreigner, check, defelct more blame check. Wont change the package, double check,

Status quo here.

God forbid someone selling a toxic-by-design product offend someone. We wouldn't want to let wounded pride get between people and their slow, self-inflicted suicide by lung cancer, would we?

Noticed that too, but the country whose citizens look the most like monkies to my eye is the Philippines. Super monkey-like! Shocked

Where does the ad say that the monkeys are meant to represent African people? I just see animals recruited as labor.

“The negative reactions were totally unexpected as nobody raised the racism issue during the design process”...he stressed that foreign experts were involved in the designing of the package...

Wow, I'm always amazed how incompetent/clueless people are, designing products that don't work, launching risky marketing, then being surprised at the market's reaction.

It took me a fraction of a second to know this was going to be a problem. The Koreans working 60hr weeks, and the "foreign experts" never brought up the obvious issue?

The add doesn't imply that Africans are monkeys. They are simply using animals portraying human beings in the ad. That's everywhere in movies and advertising.
