It's rarely acknowledged here but that goes both ways. White people are consistently told they have no right to complain, they don't understand what racism is, they don't know what it's like to be a minority, blah blah blah. It's gets pretty old. I live in one of the most densely populated racially homogenous cities in the world, yet I have people telling me I don't know what it's like to be a minority. Given I have an overall positive experience and I am not discriminated against on a regular basis, but I do have a lot of experience as a minority.

The sad truth is race is going to be a big part in determining how your experience goes in Korea. If you are going to begin arguing with people about different scenarios they have experienced your race is going to be something that will be taken into consideration. I don't like that, but it's true. Stifling discussion would really be preventing people from talking about the various experiences they have had because of their race. Notice most of the threads or topics don't have titles like "Man molests student" "Man passes out of subway", nope. It's "Korean Teacher molests student", "foreigner passes out on subway". That distinction is there and it's a big part of Korean culture.

There is also the way people use their race to get credibility but can't tolerate someone using their race to take away from that credibility. "I'm Korean American so I know ......" or "I'm a white guy in a hakwon for 4 years so in my experience white people in Korea....." but then these same people get angry when someone tells them they can't relate to a particular experience because they are Korean American or a white guy in a hakwon, etc. People just want to have it both ways.

Oh, the Korea Times blah blah blah..!

Oh, my web forum is slowing down!

Oh, my salary is larger than yours!

Oh, I have a cute girlfriend...

As if this endless stream of inane rhetoric and juvenile punditry really makes any difference to the top 1 %.

Still, I once again find my eyes drawn to your tedious attempts at puerile mendacity under a cloak of sagacity. If it were not beneath my status I’d have young Jeong, my manservant, run over to Kim the Oddmongers and purchase some mind altering refreshments to help one decipher the inner workings of your charmingly naive thought processes.

Blackcat, voicing an opinion that differs from yours is not "shutting down discussion." If you can't handle opposing views, and people disagreeing with you, then I'm sorry.

I never accuse you of attempting to shut down discussion. You have a right to your opinions and they stir the pot. I don't have personal issues and vendettas with other posters. I don't PM anyone to get personal, and I really do my best to adopt a "live and let live" attitude towards the arguments here. I like to argue, but I don't really see why things should be personal.

Frankly, I think the worst attempt to stifle discussion here in recent memory was the whole "You're a Korean/gyopo" bit that was being used to invalidate a person's points, ironically from supposedly "tolerant" posters, upset at racism and superficiality in Korean culture.

No, I don't mind disagreeing with people. But telling people they don't have a clue, or a right, to criticize Korean culture, or implying that they're racist for doing so is, in my opinion, an attempt to shut down meaningful conversations. Add to that over-spamming threads with long, long, long posts.

And I know you don't get personal, that whole thing was directed at those guys from around 2009 I mentioned earlier. And I don't hate certain posters either; as I've said I'm sure we get along famously if we had a beer together (and Patrick and I have found common ground in hockey). There's still a couple that slap the olive branch out of my hand every time I extend it to them, though. Whatever, I'm not here to make friends!

The man has a point. Blackcat certainly makes things personal more often than SR. I think Blackcat has mentioned SR's being adopted and a gyopo more than SR himself has. Thats pretty messed up.

I know you're a troll and just trying to get a rise out of me because I don't play along to your lame, tired, repetitive schick.

But I don't want my (fake) name dragged through the mud. I have never once brought up SR's history. NOT ONCE. I believe even he'd attest to that. And I think anyone who does is a vile creature. Actually, if I remember correctly, it was you who brought up these things in a thread recently that got a very disgusted reaction from even those who regularly argue with the guy.

Just for the record, my sister is 15 years old. Anything else you'd like to get off your chest? Besides the fact that you like to sleep with middle school girls of course.

Weird... Blackcat, because I remember you laying out a vicious personal attack on SR in this thread. You brought up SRs upbringing in that post. But it looks like you went ahead and edited the entire thing out:

Quote:

I've removed my post because upon further reflection I think it came off as a personal attack which wasn't really my intent. I'm sure SR is a great guy in person, I just don't get him on this site most of the time.

So youve never brought up SRs past yet in that thread (which I read) you definitely called him out and brought his personal life into the equation, later editing the post to cover your tracks. You can either admit to it or deny it like a liar and play the "dont feed the troll" card. Your call.

A few years ago, c. 2009, there was an army of vile and nasty Korean apologists who would blanket threads, threaten people and take it to a whole new level. The Mods did nothing about it for months/years. I would say those days were way worse than it is now. I'm talking disgusting PMs, open threats of physical violence and swear words magically being allowed by these people yet being blocked by others.

I remember that as a time when posters were getting banned left and right, including those critical of the host country/people. Weird coincidence? The board lost a lot of its flavor during that period. It's been pretty much the same old same old for the last several years.

IPIC, your game is old and lame. It's been done to much greater affect with much more flair dozens of times over the years here. Try to come up with something new, or at least try to be entertaining. I'm not falling for the bait. I'm not in a tizzy or offended or getting my back up against the wall here, and I doubt SR is either. We've known each other on this board for years. If I said something as stupid as what you say to him, he'd be the one to call me out on it, not some troll.

Please, go back to talking about your smoking hot girlfriend, beta men and getting kicked out of fictional Canadian bars. That never gets old.

Nice deflection, get called out on your lies and go with the "derp not taking the bait" copout.

"I think it came off as a personal attack"

"I have never once brought up SR's history. NOT ONCE."

Those are YOUR words. And you've chosen to duck me instead of admitting you got caught lying. Says more about your character than it does mine. SR and I agree about 1% of the time, but when you come on this forum and claim you've never made personal attacks on people you BETTER be ready to accept the consequences when someone calls you out on it.

So go ahead and continue to duck me in your little corner, or go back to talking about 300 pound white women or something. That never gets old (see, I can play your game too). Laughing

Never said I didn't make a personal attack. I did in that case and I took it back. I'm not perfect. What I said was I have never brought up SR's (or anyone else's) ethnicity or past.

Sorry everyone, I know engaging with trolls only encourages them. I just don't like my name being dragged through the mud and being accused of things that the trolls themselves did. The Mods really need to start looking at this. I'm done now.

Why on earth could you not name another forum?

Gorf started his forum and advertised that here with no problems.

Wayguk.org is another option.

There are few more out there and I do not see why naming them would pose a problem.

test...

www.eslcafe.com

(*edit* that's what comes up when you type in one of the other Korean expat forum addresses.....automatically changes it to the address of this site.)

Agree with what you wrote too, Pat...I don't see why naming these forums should pose a problem. I guess some mods are seeing trolls and boogey men under their beds at night.

Well, considering that there is no "mod edit" note on the original post, and the fact that you CAN post other sites, and that the nature of the "edit" is smarmier than mod edits here tend to be, it is clear that "SORRY, CAN'T SAY, VERBOTTEN" was what was originally posted...so FDNY either self-censored, or wanted other folks to think he was censored....

I don't care about FDNY's edit notes. I wasn't making any reference to that. I was replying to Patrick who said links to other Korean esl sites aren't blocked, and I guess I'll reply to you likewise since you didn't understand what I was saying. See what happens when you type the full address for expatkorea.com...it will automatically edit itself to www.eslcafe.com

Quite clearly you CAN'T link to all other esl sites and stating otherwise is either being ignorant or deliberately attempting to mislead.

http://www.teacheslkorea.com/

http://www.esljobskorea.com/

http://www.planetesl.com/

http://www.worknplay.co.kr/

http://koreaesl.com/index.php

http://www.englishclub.com/tefl

http://www.waygook.org/

Um...one site you mentioned got changed, and a large number I just googled don't...so one site is blocked, not all of them, nor even many of them.

Work on your reading comprehension (and ability to use the quote function), mate. I never said they are all - or even many - blocked. I used that one as a curiosity in reply to Patrick asking why you couldn't name another "forum" on here to which I am also interested. At least one alternate esl site *is* blocked on Daves. That's a fact. I have no idea how many others are.

You're attributing me as saying things I haven't said. Find someone else to argue over nothing with - It's boring and pointless. Or better yet make yourself useful and find out why that site is blocked as I originally asked.

Toodles. Rolling Eyes

So you did a personal attack but you didnt bring up SRs past. WRONG.

I wont drag your name through the mud as long as you dont post LIES on this forum. Its your choice. Youre now in saving face mode after I exposed you as a liar so good job on exiting the thread with your tail between your legs. Rookie.

Psf, and what happened when I called your dumbass out, goshiwon boy, when you claimed that you'd never not finished a contract (multiple times), then later talked about the runner you pulled on your hagwon? I exposed your lies chump, and all you you could do was issue your generic troll cop out response. Blackcat is a well thought out poster/contributor on here; and only a fool would give this little troll persona you've created any real credibility.
