Make a list, the best single band/singer a country has to offer, past or present. No ties, just pick one.

Australia: Nick Cave
England: PJ Harvey
Wales: Mclusky
US: Sonic Youth
NZ: Split Enz
Canada: Neil Young

USA- I know you said no ties, but I gotta throw out Stevie Wonder/Miles Davis/Hank Williams as epitomizing 'American' music. It sounds cheesy, but as time goes on, 2Pac has to get some mention as well.

UK- Led Zeppelin
France- Edith Piaf
Korea- Shin Jung Hyun
Algeria- Cheb Khaled
Mexico- Los Tigres del Norte
Cuba- Mongo Santamaria
Mandarin- Faye Wong
Czech Republic- Dvorak
Russia- Rachmaninoff
Finland- Sibelius
Austria- Mozart
Italy- Puccini
Germany- Beethoven
Poland- Chopin

Pretty generic, but I believe that music should speak to large numbers of people.

This is an exercise in futility. My only choice is Wales: Super Furry Animals, and even then they're almost tied with Mclusky.

Maybe Sweden: Abba as well because I can't think of another Swedish artist.

Oh, and Poland: Chopin..
