Nice to see this thread up again!
Last year I took two of the Hanja tests. First I took 4급II in the earlier part of the year, which I passed easily. Then in the later part of the year I took 4급, which I passed, but just barely, not because I didn't know the Hanja well (I have every Hanja on the test memorized reasonably well), but because of the weird questions about which Hanja have "long sounds" and not always being sure which Hanja to use when converting Korean words into Hanja words.
Right now I'm working towards learning enough Hanja for the 3급II test; my Anki deck currently has 1500 Hanja in it and is still growing. I've also been working on 한문. |
Likewise nice to see you post and update us once more!
Well first of all congratulations on pass the level 4 tests! Those tests are not easy.
That's very exciting that you will be starting on your journey to take the level 3 test. When will you be taking it? BTW Fox, how many hours a day do you study in preparation for these hanja tests? Have you started putting that you have passed the level 4 hanja test on your resume? I think a lot of Korean employers would value that and respect your Korean abilities. |

It's hard to say. Each test is an order of magnitude more difficult than the last, and while I've no doubt I can plow through the level 3 Hanja and memorize them all, I worry about the Hangeul --> Hanja word conversion portion of the test. The more Hanja there are on the test, the more Hanja share the same sound, and the less effectively you can guess which Hanja will be in words you don't know. Until now I've just studied on my own, but for the level 3 test I might actually buy a study book.

It varies. I use the Anki flashcard program, which shows you cards at intervals based on memory studies and resets those intervals when you get the card wrong, so on any given day I'll have a different number of Hanja up for review. Review times can vary from 15 minutes to a half hour I'd say. Anki says I have spent 167.2 hours on "answer time" for my Hanja deck since its creation. I seriously suggest anyone who wants to learn Hanja (or Korean for that matter; I have made two separate Korean vocabulary decks as well) download Anki and use it daily.

If I ever apply for another job in Korea I probably will; Koreans always seem very impressed by the idea of a westerner using Hanja. However, I have worked at the same school continuously since coming to Korea, so it has not come up! |

Is 한자 anglocized as "hanjia"? I always assumed it would be "hanja." |

Yes, but I would not expect to hear anything for a while! Tentatively I could see myself trying the next test sometime in late summer if I work hard and stay focused.

Hanja is correct under the only Romanization system I know. |

I'm having trouble finding sample exams or questions for these tests online. Anywhere to take practice exams? Or perhaps a book?
I studied Chinese in college (got a minor) and have been working on my Korean....I only realized after finding this thread about a month ago that reviewing my Chinese and practicing hanja is actually helping me learn my Korean much faster...So interesting to see the connections between words... |

Curious to see how everyone is doing on their Hanja these days. I'm putting in the time to learn more and more Chinese but I just never seem satisfied enough. For every new character that I learn, somehow two grow in it's place and before I know it I'm overwhelmed.
Want to hear what other people are up to. Curious to see if anyone has tested in the hard hanja tests and put that bad boy in their resumes. |

I passed 준1급 back in 2003, which I think was about 3000 characters. By that level all the hanja you learn are annoying and there are so many identical 훈독 meanings by then that they all become a blur. Just take a look at all the characters for 옥소리:
http://hanja.naver.com/search?query=%EC%98%A5%EC%86%8C%EB%A6%AC
(there are more if you put 옥소리 in the search bar) |
