Query: Do you have any stories of folks who tried to pass themselves off as something they're not when in Korea?
I liked to claim that I was a filmmaker and had ideas. The fact is I did have some meager plans but of course didn't produce anything. One of my coworkers- a corny as hell dude- fancied himself a model, quit the hagwon after choking out a kid but came back on an entertainer visa and is now a model/actor full time. HE MADE IT!

Flipside- do you have stories of people who came here hiding their past, like the rumors of gyopos who are wanted LA gangsters and fled here to get "straight"?

Claims are easily made, but I'm curious about people who pass themselves off as something outlandish or actual outlandish folks living the life as a norm while on the run.

I'd have to say that I've met a few, if not a half dozen, of these types here myself. More or less referred to as pathological liars back home...there are more here, and there, than you may think.

If you look for the "Freakiest Waygook Thread" you'll find some stories like that. I remember one of a guy whose co-worker claimed to work for the CIA and couldn't show his university degree to immigration because it was a classified document.

Someone should bring that freakiest waygook thread back, it was the best thing on this forum- or any Korea forum for that matter

Definitely. Some people choose to "reinvent" themselves when given the opportunity. IPIC obviously inspired this thread Wink

Worked with a few over the years. At times wondered if it was a disadvantage not to have done likewise a little, but those guys are much more transparent to Korean administrations and students alike than what they realize - altho' both the above often get their kicks out of playing along with it, at least for a while.

The only ones that really drove me nuts a little were those who tried to make up or exaggerate backgrounds in legal experience ...

I remembered visiting this other town with a buddy a few years ago. We were at a Wa Bah and some Koreans asked us what our jobs were. Before I could say anything, my buddy drunkenly blurted out we were porn stars here to work with some Korean ladies on a Korean film shoot. (This during the height of Anti English Spectrum hate spreading.) He so crazy!!!
