Many of my brightest and most hard-working students are young Korean females. I see their intellectual curiosity and their positive attitudes and I’m motivated to do all I can to support their future academic aspirations.

However, again, I am confronted by the harsh reality of knowing that there is a very high probability one or more of my students will face sexual assault in Korea. Perhaps some of my female students have already experienced some form of inappropriate sexual advance.

If we take our roles seriously and responsibly, how can we properly educate and prepare our young Korean female students to prepare for their roles in a society where women are very much considered second class, inferior beings?
How do we reconcile helping them do their best to achieve their dreams with the reality that they live in a country where rape, forced sexual acts, physical violence even from their spouses or their spouses parents is the norm, not the exception?

How to respond to this? mmmmmmmmm..........

Choices:
A) You read Lolita, didn't you?

B) Tell them all about the Big Bad Wolves....Warning.....Warning!

C) Tell them Korea is too corrupt to make life worth living.

D) Tell them how to exploit the situation by being manipulative and devious.

or, I think I'll go with:

E) Yeah, this is going to end well.

I think about this so much, and Ill admit I get warnings from my boss sometimes Im paying too much attention to the girls and not enough to the "jealous/whiny/butthurt" beta boys. Sounds a little creepy when I say it like that .. lol

Korea is a Patriarchy, and in the modern age, they still favor boys, so you add the modern age with internet, world travel, world food, etc to the girls, who get ignored (at least on a basic level) over the boys, and what happens: the girls are MORE hungry for it. Have you met that many spoiled girls, more than boys (I havent) here.

Boys are still beholden to Familial Duty, and even though its not as strong as before, its still the main dialogue in a Korean mans life, from school ties, to the miltary, to company life, etc. They dont know how to do anything else. They may say otherwise, but their actions are largely unchanged Its the direction of a society.

I think we just keep giving the girls a great experience and be kind to them, and theyll work it out for themselves.

Remember, the low-birth rate isnt because the boys dont want to marry, ITS THE GIRLS want to be more and do more.

If we're male, we should stay away from this topic. If a female foriegn teacher wants to comunicate with a girl student who's good at English and let her pass it on by word of mouth, that might be planting the seed.

All we can do is plant a seed sometimes. I never hesitate to mention that women with certain jobs make good money and many men are happy to marry them. I mention that there are many married couples where the women make more money than the men. Just kickstart their imagination a little.

But, I think the younger generation, especially in Seoul, this is starting to happen a little. It plants the seed that girls don't have to be lazy gold diggers and can be financially independant and someday marry who they want rather than some dude with money their parents want and whom they don't love.

It's good to see these changes happening, even if more beta males result from it the way it has happened in our culture.

Since 2009, there are more girls in Korean Universities than guys.

But don't forget, for every 'smart' girl I teach, there is 1 'dumb' girl too. Some students are just beyond recoverable.
