I'm paying over 200,000 won per month, (I think maybe its 220, I forget). I know there's nothing I can do about it, but I feel like that is a little high considering the recruiter said that the apartment would be provided. I just wanted to see if I was thinking correctly. What is the typical apartment maintence fee people on this board have to pay?
(This does not include utilities, etc. Those are seperate) |

Depends on the quality of the building. Newer apartments or officetels will be more expensive. The fee is usually a flat fee or amount x pyung size. For example my last officetel was 8,000 x 16 pyung. |

Seems reasonable to me. I live in one of the most luxurious neighborhoods in Seoul, with top of the line amenities at my disposal. My neighbors are some of the most prominent people and my high rise stunning view of Seoul is worth a thousand words.
It seems fine compared to what I pay but compared to someone on acupcake salary in a rathole like HBC it might be out out of their budget.  |

Well, you're nothing if not consistent. We all now know that your non-teaching job is better than anyone else's, your girlfriend is the hottest woman in Seoul, and that your digs make all other digs pale by comparison. Oh, and that you feel compelled to remind everyone else on an ESL board ceaselessly.
Don't get me wrong, it makes for a good chuckle every time you post. But don't forget that you never get any taller by stepping on someone else's shoulders. And I can't help but think that if you actually spoke the way you post at a public function, you'd soon find yourself alone in a corner slamming down what would undoubtably be the most expensive booze in the place, whispering on deaf ears that nobody else could afford it. |

I'm not in Seoul, but at my previous nice, but not new officetel I was paying around 120,000 won in building fees which included hot water. It was set to go up to over 150,000 when I moved out.
I'm not in a two-room without a parking garage and 24 hour security. Fees are 50,000 won and it includes cable/internet. The construction quality and location are not as nice as the previous building. |

I live in a dumpy Soviet-style apartment block in a smallish town in the countryside. Fees are about 55,000 to 60k for a normal month, but it was like 70,000 in the summer due to constant air conditioning use. AFAIK it covers stuff like electricity, water use, elevator, and other random crap I guess. Probably some maintenance fees even though the place is falling apart and there's definitely no maintenance going on. No lights in the hallways at night, which is annoying and dangerous. |

It seems like it is on the more expensive side (if it doesn't include utilities), but not out of the ordinary. I have lived in two different officetels and typically paid anywhere from 120-200k a month, but that includes utilities. |

I think it is dishonest for schools and recruiters to advertise free housing and then once the applicant arrives sting them with a $200 a month "maintenance fee". The school should pay that if they are claiming to be giving away "free housing". |

When I was at my first school, it was on the campus of the school, and there was no maintenance fee. The school also paid all the utilities (which is good, because the place was huge, and heating would have been annoying).
When I was at my second school, maintenance fee was around 100,000 in a fairly new high-rise building. Utilities were separate.
My third, the school owned the actual building (not renting), so I didn't have to pay any maintenance fee, but I did pay utilities.
Now I'm paying 50,000 a month, which includes TV and internet. |

One apartment I looked at moving into once had a monthly fee of about 500,000 won. That was for security, maintenance, as well as water and heating. Given the size and quality of the apartment, I don't think this was an unreasonable amount. But I didn't end up living there anyway. |

I think the whole maintenance fee system is a scam, just a way to bleed out more money from tenants who already put down key money or pay rent. Why doesn't rent cover "maintenance"? It's the same with airfares, you pay a price and then it's like "Oh, by the way, there's a fuel surcharge!" Isn't that part of the price? Do I pay for a taxi and then the gas after I arrive? Rent should be inclusive of everything (besides separate utilities that you use). It's ridiculous to me. Many condos back home have less monthly fees and include actual perks like pools, recreation centers, actual security (not some old man sleeping in a box). It's just silly to me. |
