I seem to have a problem with a few of my 6th grade students. Two boys are interested in the same girl and they are fighting a lot, which is disruptive in class. Has anyone else experienced this? I am new to this and would really appreciate some advice. I was hoping it would just play itself out but I think I might need to talk the boys. What should I say? Should I talk to them together or separately?

I would ask them if they were actually gay because they are spending more time together than wooing the damsel in school dress.

Just tell your director about the problem. The boys in my school seem to have no interest at all in girls....even the middle school students.

Make a seating chart with the boys far from each other and the girl.

Tell the class the five students with the best participation scores at the end of the month get to pick their own seats.

This gives them too much control. Problems will reappear.
Fine to give them a reward for participation, but that one's a bad idea IMO.
Definitely use a seating chart though.

Talking won't achieve anything.

The boys rivalry will continue until it is decisively resolved in favour of one or the other.

But the place for these sort of disputes is on the playground or sports field, not the classroom.

What you need to do is make absolutely clear that the classroom is for studying, not fighting. They can argue in their free time or break time.

This sounds like me up against the Chinese teacher. We are rivals! Let them work it out.

Lol.

Remind them of the fact that hot K-women become permed helmonies within a decade and that marriage forces you to give up your time, hopes, ambitions and money to in-laws..for the rest of your life.
