I'm talking about learning new skills that you can use on your resume. I have a teacher's degree. If I was in the states I would take the Praxis tests. I can't do that while I'm in Korea, because I need to go to a testing center in NJ. Also, I'd like to obtain my MA in Special Education. I can only do this when I go back home.
It seems that people on Dave's ESL dismiss online college courses. If taking an online college course is a joke, what other options are there? Attend a college in Korea? I highly doubt that I would be able to transfer my credits that I earned in Korea when I go back to the states. My Korean sucks anyway, so taking college classes in South Korea is out of the question.
How does everyone upgrade their qualifications while living abroad? |

if you have the coin, the University of Southern California offers legit courses with a real degree, can get your cert too if its needed. Their education school, Rossier, is ranked 15th this year and steadily climbing every year. Be forewarned though, it isnt cheap. |

WTF????
Do you even live in Korea. Look around you. 99% of foreign teachers do not have a qualification related to teaching.
So they wouldn't be "keeping up" as you put it.
They don't keep up.
They drink hite and cass while outside convenience stores waiting for the inevitable death of their hopes, dreams and careers. |

Its the employers that dismiss them.
Ok, not all employers. But they lack the rock solid credibility of a campus on-site qualification.

Lol... This is so true!
My coworkers are always asking me to have a few beers with them at 7-Eleven. I normally decline. |

Um, actually some of us pay off thousands of dollars of student loans and credit card debts, too. |

It's not really a criticism of the TEFLers.
For them it may well be the best option to live life for the moment and why not get blasted and enjoy your time?
The alternative of gaining more qualifications is expensive and has an uncertain outcome.
WTF am I doing on here? Time to head out to party!!! |

Funny, I've been looking at this school for distance learning. Bloody hell it's expensive. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it vs. something like Framingham State. |

Let's see:
1. Go to school, get master's and phd
2. Go to school, become a bigger ESL clown/monkey for the kids
Tough choice. However, I have yet to see the benefits of being more qualified to teach your native language alone. It would be better to double up on another subject like math, science, or business.
Compare here:
http://www.eslcafe.com/jobs/korea/index.cgi?read=58934
"Salary (per month) is dependent on qualifications and experience as follows:
2,800,000 won MA+TESOL Certificate+ more than one year ESL/EFL experience
2,700,000 won MA + more than one year ESL/EFL experience
2,600,000 won BA+TESOL Certificate+ more than one year ESL/EFL experience
2,500,000 won BA+ more than one year ESL/EFL experience"
Man, if they only pay 100,000 more with a 2,700,000 job what would the increase be for a normal 2.1 job? |

Too bad. The U.S. has a lot of opportunity.
Who's going to this?
Internationally renowned social scientist, champion speaker, philanthropist and author Nick Adams will speak at a special event hosted in his honor in downtown Seoul, on Saturday, the 9th of November.
Ever wondered why Americans are richer than Europeans? Ever realized how soulless a collectivist society is? Ever pondered the impact of political correctness on the free economy? And why is it that Mr. Adams is famous for declaring “the bigger the government, the worse the citizen”?
Come and listen to one of the world’s most passionate and eloquent advocates of America, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to hear the answers.
Mr. Adams says: “I am really excited about visiting South Korea in November. I have always wanted to come, and heard of how friendly and welcoming the people there are. For all North Korea’s saber-rattling over the decades concerning Seoul and a “sea of fire”, Seoul remains standing, a thriving metropolis and a daily rebuke to the poverty of Pyongyang’s closed socialist system. I’m proud to visit.” |

I choose option 3!
3. Don't go to school. Continue to work and get paid. Polish up on nursery rhymes. Watch bank balance grow. Shake my head at the returning teacher who went to get an MA tesol and now returns as my co-worker for the same salary. |

I actually agree with this. Degrees are nice, but if everyone has one, wouldnt it be better to make yourself more valuable to your prospective company with useful experience, and even a bit of Korean language? |
