Title pretty much sums it up. I am in America and my Woori bank card broke.
It is/was one of the "international" cards that work outside of Korea. Never had a problem till the magnetic strip cracked. Now cant take out money.
I am having a difficult time trying to get someone on the phone to replace it.
Has anyone ever have to deal with this before?

Thanks much.

Unless you have online banking through Wooribank, you are going to have a tough time replacing your card. The Wooribank branch responsible for your card will be the people who will have to re-issue the card, unless it is a Wooribank "credit card." Add to this the time it is going to take (usually up to 15 days, even in Korea) to receive the newly replaced card, and it amounts to no good news for you. I suggest you find some friends willing to front you a loan until you can get back and pay them what they loan you. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but sometimes bad things happen at the very worst times. Good luck and I hope you are able to find a suitable solution.

I called the U.S branch and they told me to contact the "mother" bank in S. Korea.

Fast forward to a few minutes ago. I called the Seoul Branch. And the voice prompt says. " For service in English press 7". Then the voice prompts said," To replace a lost or stolen card press 3". I got hold of a customer service representative who couldn't speak English and told me to call back.

When I left Korea I figured I would be back sooner or later. Thing is I've been "on vacation" in America for the better part of a year. I'd like to resolve this without having to get on a plane. ...

Could open a bank account in the US with a credit card to buy you some time, but you'd still need to get a new card sent from Korea. Hopefully once you have the card you could go to a US bank and do a transfer with it, but I dunno if that would work. If you wanted to do a transfer from your SK funds to your US accounts you'd need to be set up so you could do it online. SK banks are so backwards that if you're not set up for it they might require you to be there in person to get your account set up for an international transfer. Hopefully Woori Bank makes international transfers easy.

Also could maybe see if you can open a US Woori Bank account (you can often open accounts online in the US) and maybe the transfer would be easy. Probably not, Korean banks are ridiculous.

If you leave Korea like that, take the cash with you. When will these kids learn?

Anyhow, the sqeeky wheel gets the grease. Call the English line and spek to another department. Tell them the other one hang up on you and you need the problem resolved. If they hang up on you, keep calling back and if need be become an sob about it.

it really is my own fault. I really knew better as well.

Looks like they will issue me a new card. BUT. They can't sent it to the US. But they will send it to a friends apartment. They were hesitant about that one. But when they found out he has a K wife....

I' am kinda remembering why I left Korea in the first place. I'm remembering how weary and exhausting simple things like getting a new bank card can be....

How many times will threads like this be posted? Never rely on a Korean issued card abroad. Never. Not ever. Never. Not once. Don't do it. Never. Is that clear?

No kidding. Let the NOOBS learn. I took my smoking hot girlfriend on a trip to SEA this year and we brought about $3000 in CASH just to get us through the first night. For the rest of the vacation, I used the cards from accounts I have in various banks throughout the world. Korean cards are not reliable; put your money elsewhere when you go abroad.

Why on earth would anyone rely on a bank card from a country like Korea? Their ATM's have only recently started spitting out money after 11:00 PM things can stop working for any variety of Korean reasoning, and how are you going to resolve the problem with banks that only speak Korean? You should have brought cash contained in a secure traveling pouch with you if you didn't have a card from a more reliable country.

If you have a bank account in the US you can try to your US Bank have the money wired out of Korea.

Perhaps this has been posted before. But one of the many reasons why banking is so unreliable in S. Korea goes back the governments decision to use only Active-X.

Perhaps you are out with your "posse" tonight. Sippin' Johnny Walker at the VIP lounge in the best club in the world.

By the way, $ 3000 US dollars for a night on vacation? Are you kidding? That's exactly $1000 dollars less than I normally tip the hotelier whenever I check into my favorite haunt. Mind you, he splits that with the rest of the staff.

And you keep your money in various banks throughout the world? Really? Yet you have the nerve to call out NOOBS on this site?

No one with real money keeps it in a bunch of different banks. Ever heard of investing?

and before I forget: clinck! You have another deposit in your peach tin piggy-bank.

Yep! It's been a while since he posted his incessant drivel, so...
R.I.P. IPIC... if he decides to return, I will be the first to drop some coins in his peach tin...

BTW, to those of you who got rattled by IPIC's malarkey, grow a pair and learn how to handle some heckling. I'm just a skirt with a mouth, but I enjoyed my tussles with good ol' IPAYINCASH.
