So… here’s the story

I went out for a few drinks with my friend. I maybe had 3 screwdrivers. It was my friend’s friend’s birthday and they wanted to go to this club at 12. There were so many of us that we took separate cabs. Once I got to the club I went in and began looking for my friend. No more than 10 minutes later I turned a corner and was grabbed from behind, drug out of the club, thrown on the ground and stomped on by 6 guys (by friends acct) until my friend came out and saw me getting my ass handed to me. He got them to stop, got me up, into a cab, and on my way. I cried the whole way there because I just took a beating without fighting back. Why? Because fighting back in Korea gets you arrested when you are not Korean. I cried because I felt my pride die.

I thought my friend paid the driver before I left, but the driver asked for more money when we got there. I paid him, got out of the car, and sat on the curb in my bloodied shirt. I likely had a concussion.

After sitting there for maybe a minute or two, the driver got out and I stood up as he approached me. He grabbed me by the shirt and I pushed him away. He fell to the ground and said “I call police.”

I should have run… but I was a) tired, b) not thinking straight because of booze and head trauma, and c) thought I had done nothing wrong.

The police came, took me to a car, and then a station. I used my phone with its screen broken from the beating to call a friend for advice/help. He explains the driver wants me to pay him 200k. I said sure, but then my phone died. They police then took me to another larger station. No one spoke English at either place, so I had to stay longer. (They never told me just how long I was going to wait.) They tried to get me to sign stuff… without a translator, but I refused. They never said I was arrested.

When the translator got there at 9 in the morning (27hrs no sleep, possible concussion), I explained the whole thing to her for a report. They then told me I could pay the guy and things would be ok. I got the acct number from the officer, and paid him.

Two months later I am ending one job and trying to get another. Background check pops up. Dunno if it is an open issue, or an arrest. School’s manager seems ok, but wants to talk to the officer. The officer was on vacation. (Will be back tomorrow) I have a flight for Friday to go home before hopefully starting my job in about 2 weeks.

Anyone have some advice?

Oddly, after being attacked by 6 guys, getting a receipt slipped my mind.
;-p

I wish I did.

Why didn't you call the police and have a police report filed when you were attacked initially? I'm sure there were cameras surrounding the area.

Man just reminds me that we all need to be a bit more careful sometimes at night. Speaking of which, where did this occur?

My friend got me into the car pretty quick. I was taken around a corner before the beating, so there were likely no cameras.

Apgujeong. I really cant recall the name of the club.

The plan tomorrow is to take a translated statement to the officer requesting information/to have him speak to my new employer who plans on calling him.

No idea how well this will work out, but I do hope for the best. I generally enjoy working here, and this has really only been the worst of maybe 2-3 bad experiences here in my 4+ years here.

I was even planning on starting to go for a Masters in TESOL next year.

Story does not add up in any way, shape or form.

Troll or hot air or both? Question

I hate this.

Any time someone recounts an altercation, someone always pipes in with accusations of trolling.

Jodami, what doesn't add up?

BTW, in terms of trolling, Jodami<IPIC. You're a scrub, as he would say.

IPIC would probably call him a beta troll.

Where did this happen? (Initial incident). At least that way others can avoid that place and not share the same experience.

Sickening story. Sorry this happened to you.

You have nothing to be ashamed of. The 6 dudes who beat you up are cowards.

A similar thing happened to me 3 years ago in Hongdae. Three guys beat me up after their friend sexually assaulted an acquaintance of mine. Personally, I don't believe clubbing is safe in Korea or anywhere for that matter.

For once we agree. Although it might be true but the OP was far more drunk and is leaving some things out.

For one thing, Apgujeong tends not to draw the beatdown crowd. Then dude who just got beaten by 6 people and is bloodied and according to him, potentially concussed, is just put in a cab? Alone? Not going to the hospital? Not calling the cops? Taxi driver dops off bloodied person and just stays there? Dude should have peeled outta there.

Seriously, who the heck sees their friend get stomped on by 6 dudes, throws them in a cab by themselves and apparently then proceeds to head back into the club that 6 dudes just stomped his friend in to continue partying?

Either your "friend" is a major douche or he thought you were in the wrong and you were far more belligerent and out of control than you were and wanted you away from everyone.

Or the story is a crock.

So you knocked him down. The taxi driver must have told the police that you assaulted him, and despite you paying blood money there is still a record of the incident. Good luck.

To be fair, at the very least there's got to be something missing from this story. Dude was dragged in back for a beat down just for fun, then his friend just happens to luck upon him (even though he was behind the club)? Trolling or deliberate obfuscation, either way, something doesn't add up.

I gotta go with this one. Seriously six guys just walk up to someone in a club and unprovoked attack him? And if these guys are going around attacking foreigners why didn't they go after the friend? I could see it (maybe) on the street in a dark alley somewhere but in a brightly lit club?
And the friend's actions afterwards make no sense. Nor do the taxi driver's.

Now if the OP was hitting on some Korean girl who happened to be one of the Korean guys girlfriend...then yeah I could see something like that happening...but according to him he was just looking for his friend.
