I have had NOTHING but bad reactions to my plans to come over here. I'm almost 28 years old so I don't factor it into whether I CAN, but I have to admit the nonstop onslaught of negativity wears on my sometimes. Is there a such thing as a good reception to an announcement that you plan on teaching over here? Is my family just particularly freaked out because I am an only child, and a girl (woman)?

I am not sure what to do to try and make them feel better, because I still plan on coming. My family is "country" and doesn't really use the internet so their researching on their own is limited. I don't think it would matter anyway.

Are they right? Is it more dangerous than sites like these let on?

I care because I feel bad about them worrying about me. I guess I shouldn't because they're just emotionally manipulating me which should give me even more reason to go...

Like I said, it's not a matter of me not feeling able to decide...I'm an adult. I just wonder if they have a point about it being "dangerous".

What reasons do they give for it being dangerous? I think they would be unable to prove that Korea is more dangerous for you than your home country.

I'm assuming that your family knows very little about Korea (just like mine before I went there).

On the scale of Zero to Dangerous, Korea ranks about a 2. I'd put most American cities and towns well above Korea in terms of Danger.

About the only thing you have to be worried of here are:
1) Scooters flying up onto the sidewalk in Seoul, and
2) Your employer.

Seoul's safe, Korea's safe, the drinking water's safe. That's pretty much it. You're 28. That's the age I was when I came over. Live your life, take a little bit of risk, it might be worth it. Was for me.

You're a grown woman, it's time to cut the cord and make your own decisions. If your parents don't support your decision that's unfortunate but that's on them. Maybe I'm lucky but my parents were pretty excited to hear I was going to Korea. My father was a very successful businessman but luckily for me he never prioritized money nor did he ever push me into any profession I wasn't interested in. He tells me all the time how he wished he had gotten to travel more often at my age and how lucky I am to be able to do it. With that being said even if my parents weren't supportive I'd have still gone anyway.

Seriously though, grow a set, be your own person and stop letting other peoples feelings dictate your life. Do you want to come to Korea? Because before you make that flight you had better make your mind up. If you arrive here with a guilty conscious then you're going to be miserable and will most likely quit and return home. And you know what you'll be greeted with? Your parents telling you, "We told you so!"

You're already 28 years old, it's time to grow up.

Thanks for the replies as for the safety.

As for "growing up", I really don't need to be told to grow up by a forum full of strangers. I can guarantee you I've already travelled to other countries and dealt with things in my life I very much doubt any of you have (I admit an infinitesimal chance may be there that you in fact have dealt with similar life circumstances, but I very much doubt it) and so this isn't a matter of me being "brave" or "immature" or "needing to cut the cord". It's more a matter of me probably overthinking everything and worrying too much about how my actions affect other people .That's probably narcissistic to some degree, but it's not immature.

Also, I do have to admit that I was expecting this sort of response, but it's still rather tiring nonetheless to have to sort through all this chaff about cord-cutting and such.

Seriously, you guys aren't superheroes for already being over there....it's an entry level, low paying job that requires zero work experience that you pretty much got for the cosmic accident of being born white. I really don't understand the holier than thou attitude that seems to be pervasive here....although I was warned about it.

I was told the people in Korea I might will probably not be like the kind of people on this board, and I can only hope so

Why don't you just get the info you seek from the person or persons who warned you about this board instead of posting about your bizarre, inconsequential family?
