I pay my own utilities but pay no other fees. No maintenance fees. My place is small but modern. It's great to know modern buildings can be comparable to western ones. (IE No mold, inefficient and expensive heating, etc.) But, I'm not in Seoul. A newer building in Seoul prob would have those along with rent. But, find out what they are before moving into one or pay a bigger deposit to get the rent price down.

One apartment I looked at moving into once had a monthly fee of about 500,000 won. That was for security, maintenance, as well as water and heating. Given the size and quality of the apartment, I don't think this was an unreasonable amount. But I didn't end up living there anyway.

Mine is even more than that, but includes all of the above plus internet and electricity.

I'm paying over 200,000 won per month, (I think maybe its 220, I forget). I know there's nothing I can do about it, but I feel like that is a little high considering the recruiter said that the apartment would be provided.

(This does not include utilities, etc. Those are seperate)

I think it is dishonest for schools and recruiters to advertise free housing and then once the applicant arrives sting them with a $200 a month "maintenance fee". The school should pay that if they are claiming to be giving away "free housing".

I think the whole maintenance fee system is a scam, just a way to bleed out more money from tenants who already put down key money or pay rent. Why doesn't rent cover "maintenance"? It's the same with airfares, you pay a price and then it's like "Oh, by the way, there's a fuel surcharge!" Isn't that part of the price? Do I pay for a taxi and then the gas after I arrive? Rent should be inclusive of everything (besides separate utilities that you use). It's ridiculous to me. Many condos back home have less monthly fees and include actual perks like pools, recreation centers, actual security (not some old man sleeping in a box). It's just silly to me.

absolutely this. the korean style of having a "maintenance fee" is ridiculous. right, i should pay an inflated cost for an adjosshi to sit and watch dramas as my "security guard" when he could barely see the person in front of him and if needed would have trouble catching up to a grade school child running backwards. no thanks.

Geeez...whats up with these prices? Must be a Seoul thing.

I pay 30,000 won a month and live in a pretty new building (built just before I arrived). That, somehow, covers electric (including blasting A/C 24-7), trash (we can basically just dump everything in a designated area and only have to do a minimum of sorting), and internet.

Seems pretty reasonable to me. In fact, it seems almost suspiciously low. But hey, 5 years running and no shut off of the juice...

What's even worse is the fact that a lot of that "maintenance fee" goes towards paying someone to throw away a lot of those garbage advertisement cards and flyers that get stuck to the hallways and every single person's door. These advertisements shouldn't even be allowed in the first place. I have also heard that this "maintenance fee" helps to cover the property tax of the building for the owner although I am not sure if this is altogether true or not...
