I believe this is a viable topic for all you smart people. It is something we ought never forget. I'm not going into cultural relativism, boring stuff I imagine whatever it is. What I would like to mention is what we often forget.

These are not just words to me. And this is not just because I lived many years in Asia. Roll your eyes if you like. You really need to see it as not just words, but ....I dunno shock or awareness?

What goes on as I have seen is quite something. You see the own culture as wow, but that fades.

Why does that fade? It is still odd and I guess the travel gave the comparison point.

I suppose it makes you know, you are put together, You are not special.

Duh, you say.

You are not special.

It's posts like this that make you realize how badly this place needs GIFs and at least mild profanity.

Seems like a perfectly normal thing for an EFLer in Korea to say, it's a sanity-draining place.

Yes, Joelove, this is a viable topic, although I am not so sure if it is suitable for smart people. Is it something we ought never forget? Cultural relativism, whatever it is, could very well be boring stuff, I imagine. And you mentioned what we often forget.

Like your case, these are not just words to me, because I lived many years in Asia. I sometimes do roll my eyes. Yet, I don't see anything here but words ....and sorry to say it but I am not feeling shocked or aware.

What goes next as you have seen is absolutely and definitely quite possibly something. Just as you stated, joelove, perhaps the multitudes view the own culture as wowserifically fantabulous, but that fades and withers as quickly as the words we know we ought never forget.

So, the question you posed was "Why does that fade?" Oddly enough, travel gives a comparative point. That's why we should get on the short bus and bow deeply to the driver.

Forget what they say, joelove, you and me, we are put together.
To quote Homer Simpson "Doh".

Perhaps we are special.

Agreed about the fade. It's unavoidable.

No, it isn't. Immigrants around the world go and live in other countries, including this one, and do fine.

If you're always a negative thinker who externalizes their problems, no matter where you go, life will be "insane".

This makes more sense to me than the OP, but that's just a good example of cultural relativity.
