Dongguk has just been checking with teachers about resume qualifications, but something could be up. Time will tell. Nothing has been said about M.A degrees so far. Dongguk would be hit hard though if this were true as half of the staff only has B.A degrees.

A guy i know just got a job at Honam University in Gwangju. He only has a BA. He's going to be extra gutted if this comes into effect.

Take this for what it's worth, as someone who is one class shy of an MA in an ESL related field, and applying to jobs I've seen posted and using friends I know who work at university's, they've all told me the same thing, they can't hire me until I have my MA in hand. I don't know how everyone else is doing but this has been my experience so far this university hiring season.

In my uni they are 'advising' staff without Master's degrees to begin one before March. So there are a number of staf who have started an online one this semester. There is no official word yet on whether not having one would mean one's contract is affected.

FYI as of last July, National Universities do not hire anyone for the instructor position (tenure track).

The entire position of "instructor" has been phased out and the first step toward tenure is now the assistant professor level.

Thus, requirements are higher and there will be more contract non-tenure/ adjunct positions open.

The tenure track 'full-time instructor' positions never had anything to do with MA holders. Those were one-year initial contract positions on the tenure track put in place as a kind of review and weed out period prior to fully streamlining someone into the tenure track rank of Assistant Professor. Originally, it allowed a university to fire someone after review without too much back blast. Could they teach? Keep up with research? Fit in with other faculty?

However, as the larger universities attracted more and more Koreans familiar with the N. American system, and who participated more in international conferences, the position title and rank became a bit of a misnomer. People got sick of trying to explain a probationary tenure track position when they had a doctorate, and in many cases, post-doc experience.

Back to the original topic at hand. Can anyone post a link to the official hiring regulations?

I will not be renewed by my uni because of these vague regulations that I can't find anywhere. I will only have an MA with 1 year uni and 4 years public school experience in Korea.

It seems a lot of universities are being strict about only university experience counting. Last year it seemed a lot of places were willing to weight and convert some of the public school / hagwon experience.

Because there is increasing pressure to more officially count MA holders as 'visiting full time lecturers'. In the university system, the only experience that counts is experience gained after the completion of the terminal degree, or in this case, the degree required for employment.
