I heard that you can fight your employer at the labor board if they don't renew your contract. Is this true? I heard a story about a guy who had a personality conflict with his boss, and she didn't want to renew his contract. He fought her on it and managed to get his contract renewed. Does anyone have any experience with this? I want to keep my job, but I'm afraid my contract isn't going to be renewed. I haven't been the perfect teacher and have made some mistakes, but I've corrected my actions (being late for class), so I would hope that would make a difference at the labor board if it comes down to it. I've worked there for a long time. |

I would imagine if they don't renew your contract and you attempt to fight them on it then you'll be in for a very long and miserable year. Plus you will probably be fired for your first transgression.
Honestly I have no idea what the ruling on this but I'd imagine the school has no obligations to re-signing you as the contract you signed is now up.
Why would you even want to work somewhere you're not wanted? |

Maybe he had a good reason for getting a new contract - you don't! |

It is possible to win but you would need to prove the expectation of renewal. i.e that they signalled their intention to renew and then changed their mind. |

Thank you so much for this info- I didn't know this. I have a saved email that says they plan to renew my contract, but some things have happened that are making me question whether this will actually happen. |

I agree that it would probably make for a miserable year. As long as they're honoring their end of the contract in an honorable manner, such as paying severance and so on, I personally don't think it would be right to take them to the Labor Board. In my opinion, only dishonorable employers who exploit their workers and commit fraud should be taken before the Labor Board. But that's just my opinion. If I was in your shoes, I'd be happy to receive my severance pay, I'd thank them for being a decent employer, and I'd move on, wishing them the very best. |
