I think I need a lawyer/the US embassy. I was strong armed to admit guilt without a trial and have a record with no trial/evidence. Advice appreciated.

A few things. First off the U.S embassy will do nothing. They have no jurisdiction over the Korean legal system. About the only thing they will get involved with is if your passport is taken and kept by your employer...they will strong arm the guy into giving it back. Apart from that you are pretty much on your own...they may give you a list of lawyers to contact but that is about it.

Also under the Korean legal system paying blood money=admission of guilt. The guilty party pays. You paid the driver 200 K for pushing him to the ground. That is an admission of guilt right there...they are just formalizing it by having you sign this 'pledge".

As for the F-visa there are two ways to obtain this. One is to marry a Korean and the other is the "points" system. I'm pretty sure the first way they can't block your F-visa...but the second one might well be blocked.

Beat up by six guys in Apgujeong for no reason? Then just sitting there and taxi driver walks up and attacks you? I don't get it.

If you were Asian, you'd understand it in your heart and mind.

I know 4 different people who have been attacked in Korea (including myself) for no fault of their own. I was attacked because I stood up for a friend who was also a victim. Another was attacked at random. Another was attacked because he was black and was with a Korean girl. He fought back and sent his attackers to the hospital (funny story - 4 skinny Koreans decide to take on a college football player from the US in Korea on an exchange - bad decision)

There is probably more to the OPs story. There usually is. Maybe he hit on the wrong girl. Maybe he was acting dumb. But, there is NEVER a good reason to assault someone.

I am happy that many of you have never shared this experience. Honestly, I am. It's a dehumanizing experience. It is not unique to Korea though. I don't think its fair to allow it to taint how one sees Korea as a whole. I still think Korea is a great country. I remember how my Korean co-teachers wanted me to tell them exactly where my assault happened so they could deal with it themselves (I never did because I think they were serious). I also remember how the principal of my school gave me "as much time as you need" off because my face was swollen and my eyes black.

The taxi cab driver probably saw an opportunity. Or, maybe he just wanted compensation for the blood all over the back seat of his cab. I probably would too. Although, I probably would have taken the OP to the hospital and never asked for a cent. But, thats just me.

Dave's is weird. I remember how everyone just assumed I was a troll when I posted my story years ago. Stuff like this happens everywhere. "It hasn't happened to me therefore it didn't happen to you" is illogical.

Dude, Vietnam and Thailand CAN be way worse.

Are all TEFLer's alcoholics?? Why is it that they all act like 20 year old college kids? STOP GOING TO CLUBS! Find something ELSE to do for entertainment! If you wanna drink, buy a six pack and take it to your apartment and drink! TEFLer's act like they will die if they aren't constantly around other bums who spend all their money on beer and happy weed.

Grow up, TEFLer's. Just because a society likes to drink 24/7 doesn't mean YOU have to follow. Unreal.

You're a dink. I'm sorry, but you seem heartless.

Maybe I missed the part in the OP's thread where he got blackout drunk. 3 cocktails for a grown man is barely anything. He got jumped by some goons outside a club, concussed and then taken advantage of by a cab driver with the help of the useless K-police.

None of those things should be difficult to fathom for anybody that's been in this country longer than 6 months. It sucks that they both happened to dude on the same night.

What you did miss was him meeting a bunch of other people at his friend's birthday and making such an impression that when it came time for everyone to hop into cabs, he went alone. (Dude, even if you're a newbie, people will offer to have you hop along in the cab with them unless you give off a seriously odd vibe) Then, when he is getting stomped, his friend doesn't go in swinging, and then proceeds to toss his bleeding, weeping butt into a cab and head back into the club to party with everyone else, who upon being told about this must have collectively shrugged their shoulders.

And all of this at Octagon in Apgujeong. Not exactly a haven of thug life in Korea. Dude, he'd have had to have been dragged through multiple flights of stairs and past strict bouncers.

There is more to this story than is being told. I'm sorry, but if any friend, or even an acquaintance of mine were getting gang stomped my reaction would not be to throw them in a cab and go back into the club for Jaegerbombs.

or perhaps the people doing the stomping were in fact the Bouncers?
because I don't think bouncers would allow someone to be dragged out of their club, getting a beating on their way out of the club, then 6 dudes!
6!! all come running out and all jump on this white foreigner and beat him up and the bouncers just watch.
NOWAY. bouncers are there to control the club, they don't let anyone fight, or will tolerate fights in the clubs, because the club can be sued if someone is hurt in the club and also it can harm the business and other people might get hurt. so the bouncers would not allow a struggle, or grabbing of any violent kind to happen from non workers.
they would clear you out of there quick smart!

so I am thinking, the bouncers have taking this guy out, this foreigner was a smart ass drunk foreigner who took a swing at one of them and then Korean gang mentality kicked in, just like GI's in itaewon when you fight one guy you fight the platoon! and the foreigner got his ass kicked by bouncers who knew where there were no cameras.
and the bouncers also know, that a foreigner will have a very hard time to convince police in kangnam CLUB OCTAGON who obviously pay the police off that the foreigner was in the right. goodluck with that.

the only way bouncers, police and the club owners are gonna get caught out, is if the bouncers mess with a Chaebol's son! or a prosecutors son etc.. a stupid drunk white boy teacher in kangnam can have his face beaten to a pulp in korea by a korean, bouncer or anyone and you will have no chance. especially if there are no cameras or KOREAN witnesses

I can't tell you how many times I have seen Foreigners get into fights here, they bring that attitude with them from home and think they are allowed to fight, YOU WOULD get your ass smacked out back home too!
so why try it here? and you are supposed to be college educated!

so many esl teachers come here to pay off their loans I get it, but the way a lot of them behave surprises me, I think OMG, you guys actually got an education, and you guys act like complete tools in public, but then I remember my college days and remember oh that's right, they were tools then so I guess they are tools now.
grow up you idiots! fighting is for losers! and if you fight, then don't complain you got your ass beaten.

Koreans fight each other all the time because they are hot heads.
but the police can deal with them, eventually after their sober up, then say sorry and go home.. Foreigners just create frustration for the police, and the other party. so the cops think, oh just pay and go .. foreigners are drunk, NO NO NO, I NO PAY, NOT MY FAULT! IN MY COUNTRY THIS NEVER HAPPEN, WTF! NO NO NO
cop is like.. OHH JESUS!

a lot of foreigners I have met here are tools, I don't know where they are from back home, or how they were raised, but seriously foreigners getting into fights getting drunk and making asses of themselves, just gives us all a bad name, walk around itaewon or hongdae, or even some small town in korea and you will see STUPID foreigners doing stupid stuff..
it's an embarrassment!

you made your bed you lie in it!
