I perused the thread regarding this event for Gyeonggi teachers back in July, and there were mixed thoughts on the legality / mandatory nature of the event. Plenty of thoughts on the utility of the event as well.

However, I'm just curious if anyone has been to one of these Seoul events before? What sort of verification do they use that you attended? Hagwon boss is very keen on my attendance, so I'd like to prove I showed up, but possibly duck out early.

Thanks, ttompatz. I've uploaded a pic of the "Participant Record," with relevant info removed, so people can see what I'm thinking. Notice no name - so obviously they don't have names of people, which would corroborate your info.

But...there is an institution name, and a barcode, so I assume something gets scanned and KAFLA knows what hagwons were represented and those that weren't.

FYI There are two other copies of this bit, one for "Association Record" and one for "Board of Education Record".

Since I'm the only NET at my academy, it would be very easy for my boss to know if I didn't make it, assuming the association notifies no-show hagwons. Those at larger institutions are probably fine.

Any other thoughts?

For Hagwons this is what my call to the MOE told me:

If you have been working in Seoul / Korea since before October 2011, you are not required to attend.

If you came after 2011, it is mandatory to attend one of these seminars during your time here (law came into effect last year)

If you cannot / do not go tomorrow there is no visa, or immigration punishment but you will be expected to attend next year and a second non-attendance in a row could result in some issues (not sure what)

If you do not go, the school does not get fined or punished (however the school's directer was required to attend a similar seminar on Tuesday 19th and not them not attending that would yield a 10pt penalty (whatver that means)

The MOE and organisers know who works at the schools they invite and so they will know that you specifically did not attend and thus then will be able to follow your attendance record during your time here and so if you have nothing better to do tomorrow morning and plan to stay here long term, it may be best to get it out of the way tomorrrow and never have to go again.

The receipt you're given doesn't have a name on it, just the school. Not sure how they track who went if there is more than one person registered at the school.
