Hi,

So a lot of the university job ads now have this as part of their desired criteria:

"Applicants should satisfy the specified qualification criteria stated in the Employment Regulations for Private Schools Law."

Does anybody know what this is? Is this the new law/regulation that everybody was talking/worrying about? I guess I'm history, oh well..

Been discussed here before but pretty much an MA + 2 years experience will likely be the norm going forward so you hogwon jockeys can forget about moving on up to the univ level like in the past

I actually work at a university hogwonguy, I was expecting the worst anyway. I've just never noticed so many ads referring to the this new regulation. Some ads are calling it the Private University School Law or something like that..

For unis the new law is MA + 2 yrs public school or uni experience, or BA + 4 yrs. After school programs don't count.

Does it need to be two years of public school in one's home country acquired post-masters along with a teaching certification? (And I heard three for public high school or middle school (elementary school doesn't count) rather than just two for full time uni experience teaching for credit courses.) That's what I read online on the 'Foreign Professors in Korea' Facebook page anyways. (I'm not 100% sure.) Does anyone have a link?

My uncle is a Korean professor involved in the hiring of foreign instructors at his university and that is what he told me. (Public school exp in Korea.) Supposedly those are the bare minimum requirements. Each individual university may have more stringent requirements of course.

For males, you have to be at least 180 cm, pass the AIDS test, and submit to a prostate exam if you're 40.

Okay, here's what I've found. According to the new law, in order to be an instructor at a university you need a BA + 2 years research exp + 2 years teaching exp. An MA counts for 2 years research exp. The law states that as long as the total number of research+teaching is 4, it doesn't matter, which is why it's possible for a BA to get a job at a university without any research exp.

If you are fluent in Korean you can find this information by searching for the text of the 고등교육법 (higher education law) and the 대학교원 자격기준 등에 관한 규정 (rules regarding requirements for university educators). If you search for the private school law (사립교육법) all it says is that teachers must be hired according to the laws set for public universities.

The tricky part is defining what counts as teaching experience. From what I can find the law says that you must have worked as a registered teacher (read: not after school teacher or part time teacher) at an educational facility recognized by the Minister of Education (so no hakwons). But some interpretations say that in order to be a "real" teacher at an elementary/middle/high school you need to have a teaching license. I think it's a bit ambiguous, because foreign teachers, unlike Korean teachers, aren't required to have a license to teach at these schools.

Anyway, that's what I was able to find. (PS - I asked my uncle and he said he's not mistaken. Of course it's possible that he IS, but it's also possible that some schools are lying to their teachers.)
