I've heard of some universities that have a limit on the number of years that an foreign English lecturer can work there.
Does anyone know of any universities that have this? I'm particularly interested in universities in and around Seoul, but info about unis outwith this area would also be interesting (and perhaps beneficial to other posters).
If you don't want to post publicly, then feel free to PM me. |

National unis tend to do it more. Network with the area you want to work - don't expect daves ESL cafe to do it all for you.. |

Try and contact current instructors at the universities you're applying to to find out if they have a limit. Hard to make a true list since some universities will made exceptions for certain instructors they wish to retain for one reason or another. |

Thanks to both of you for the replies.
drydell - I am indeed trying to network and gain as much information from people as possible, but there is more than one way to skin a cat. Hence the reason for posting here.
atwood - contacting the existing lecturers is a good idea. I will start doing that more when the offers start coming in.
Thanks again to both of you for you advice. |

As Atwood explains, universities are arbitarary and unfair when awarding contracts to foreign teachers.
And this must change. Korean universities must start to offer parity in terms of compensation, working conditions, benefits, etc., according to one's qualifications.
Currently, Koreans discriminate and treat foreign instructors as a lower tiered academic entity, people who do not deserve the samne compensation, social benefits or job security as Koreans.
This is unnacceptable. |

As for arbitrary and unfair, that all depends. Sometimes it is arbitrary, usually when someone has unintentionally offended some administrative staffer. But just as often instructors are not kept on due to poor evaluations and the like.
As for "must change," why? As long as the market is flooded with applicants there's nothing forcing anyone to change.
Korean universities shit on Koreans who want to be professors. They hire them as adjuncts, work them like slaves and pay them little. Why do you think they're going to start paying foreign instructors with MAs, lots of them crappy distance MAs, real money? |

The only thing we can do to unflood the market is complain about how Korea sucks while praising the West (or at least pointing out the advantages there). |

Korea is over-academicized.
Too many people have higher qualifications.
PhD's are a dime a dozen in a country that has placed such massive emphasis on gaining arts degrees for so long. |
