Really, could have sworn that I read they are still high - highest in Seoul.

Ah, I just live right by that bridge, so whenever it's mentioned, it tweaks my interest.

I've seen those little images you mention... plus it sort of lights up along the rail at times - but I'm not sure it's stopped ppl jumping.

No specifics on the bridge.

I go over that bridge 4 times a day, and often see rescue workers in the water downstream (but I realize that has little to do with the actual numbers).

I think some people on this thread are applying the standards for grading in the US to the Canadian system, and then saying that the Canadian system doesn't work because it doesn't use the SAT. I've said, there are good and bads to both systems, but you have to be open minded enough to accept that grading is different in each system as well. Maybe grades are inflated in the US. In Canada, funding for schools are not dependent on grades, and neither is teacher job security. We have standardized tests WITHIN the subject/class, so it's not just all subjective. By the way, Canadian students can take the SAT and universities will consider it. It's just not mandatory.

But it's all off topic, I realize. I'm just saying, don't take the realities of one system and apply them to all of them.

I think the phones have helped.

It is the only place when I ride along the Han where I've seen a dead body being pulled out of the water. But that was just once.

And to add to this, you can take placement testing at the Uni/College if you're out of school for a couple of years.

I thought Korea was supposed to be a "confucian" society. One of the central principles of confucianism is respect for elders. Where is the respect in Korea when the elderly are the ones leading the pack to off themselves because there is no social safety net for them?

"In 2011, 35.5 out of every 100,000 Koreans in their late 40s committed suicide, but the rate went up to 40.6 for those in their early 50s, 41.9 in their late 50s, 46.9 in their early 60s, 54 for those in their late 60s, 76.5 in their early 70s and 96.1 in their late 70s."

The article also seems to suggest that Koreans are committing suicide in record numbers partially because older Koreans are "unable to adjust to the rapid changes" in Korea.

The real questions is will any Koreans truly be able to adapt to rapid changes given how mono-cultural Korea is and how narrow the range of options considered socially acceptable here.
