OK, so, they even cut people who met the qualification requirement.

One guy had a Ph.d! Any opinions about this? What is going on?

Jeez. That sucks.
Maybe clearing house and then bringing the wages and conditions down for the new batch of recruits?
Did they give the qualified instructors an excuse as to why they were being let go?

They gave us a paper, and it had three columns on it. One for evals, one from the department, and the last one Ministry of Education. The first two were passes and the last one was a fail for a lot of people, even people who had BA's with the 4 years experience. And like I said, they even dumped a Ph.d holder..still waiting for the total numbers..

OK, after reading pages and pages about qualifications why would my uni let go of someone with a MA in English Lit!

Over 10 people lost their jobs...

How long had the person with English Lit been there? If it was their first contract it makes perfect sense as they fall out of the regulations of experience. If they had been there longer there was another reason. Remember not renewed contract is not the same as fired. You should have a quick look around every year if you are hired on a yearly contract. Thats only prudent.

I personally see no issue in term limits of 4 years or so. Remember most of us have 1 year contracts which means the relationship is actually a year with no expectation of renewal. Four year turnovers ensure fresh staff and updated qualifications of what is essentially a contract workforce. I'm not saying its ideal for us. I'm saying its ideal for the Uni.
