I did it once on Halloween. It started out as a joke but then after I found out it allowed me to push my way to the front of the bar for a beer it served a purpose. I even met a pretty cute girl but unfortunately for me her friend who knew sign language arrived.

I was watching that on CNN Live at the time and remember thinking, wow, in sign language African languages are really minimal and expressionless.

"What's the point of faking sign language?"

He did it for...

the lulz
the poon
the infamy
15 minutes of fame
the sake of being at the right place at the right time
padding his resume
queen and country

Now that I watch it again, it's pretty damn funny.

The thing that is such a big deal is that the powers that be are worried about how he got through all of that security to do that, in particular, the background check.

I suspect they tried to get it done on the cheap and ended up hiring a fake freelancer.

Nice one. That would be awesome if it were true.

Actually, I just came across this on youtube. If you watch the real SL interpreter, the fake guy is not 100% off, but maybe he knew a few phrases/sounds and just repeated those enough to get the occasional one right.

A man being criticized by sign language experts for providing fake interpretations while standing close to President Obama and other heads of state at Nelson Mandela’s memorial says he becomes violent “a lot” and was hallucinating during the event.

Thamsanqa Jantjie did not describe his qualifications for being a sign language interpreter, but told The Star he works for an interpreting company that paid him $85 for interpreting Tuesday's event, according to The Associated Press. He told Radio 702 on Thursday he's receiving treatment for schizophrenia and had an episode while on stage at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

"What happened that day, I see angels come to the stadium ... I start realizing that the problem is here. And the problem, I don't know the attack of this problem, how will it come. Sometimes I get violent on that place. Sometimes I will see things chasing me," Jantjie said in an interview with The Associated Press, describing his hallucinations.

Al Qaeda must be kicking themselves....they could have hired a guy to wipe out just about every head statesmen in the West for under $100.

"Here is your magic vest...but do not let anyone see it! Now while you are on stage, if you start to see angels or other scary monsters then just press this little button and they will all go away. Here is your $85."

Well that'd look suspicious. C'mon, a FREE sign language guy? Red flags.
