Nowhere in those articles does it suggest that suicides among the elderly far outweighs the OECD average. They point out that overall suicide rates are the highest in the OECD (and a portion of those suicides are seniors) which is a well known fact and is outlined in Korean media with a particular concentration among students etc. Anyone who would deny that the Korean media hasn't addressed suicide as a problem would look like a fool.
The economist was pointing out that not only is suicide highest in Korea among OECD members but highest among the elderly. This says something about Korean society's dealing with the elderly which is quite shameful considering Korea regards itself as respecting older people (where the west is criticized by letting the elderly rot in hospitals and nursing homes). The economist attempted to make sense of this phenomenon and why it is happening, ie lack of social security and a generation that does not care combined with older values in that an individual has to sacrifice everything for his/her blood even if it means offing themselves at 66. I haven't seen any Korean media that contained dialogue on the situation in this manner. If it exists please enlighten me. If not, take some advice from your former avatar and shut up. |

Something tells me that you wouldn't be satisfied that the Korean media was adequately reporting the story until it was a front-page story for two weeks straight and every column was a self-flagellating piece about how despicable Koreans are. |

Not addressing this topic specifically, but I think we should remember that what we see in the Korean English media is not always reflective of what's out there in the general Korean media. The English editions seem … "selective" in what they publish sometimes. |

Not at all. That is your agenda. I was just pointing out that yes, the Korean media has addressed suicide, but not about the elderly and why it was so much higher than every other country in the OECD. I never said they would never have any conversations about it. Maybe they will tomorrow? But up until this point I haven't seen it.
But thanks for making a ridiculous asinine assumption. It clearly shows your partisan take on everything that gets posted here just like the korea haters. |

I do think the government needs to do more for the elderly. Free subway rides and more exercise stations along the Han River ain't gonna cut it. (Especially on a day like today.)
This is a problem that is only going to grow. If that means higher taxes, so be it. |

And you say this as someone who reads the major newspapers on a daily basis and watches the news everyday in Korean? If you are, then my apologies. However, TUM pointed out two articles already which report on the situation, and apparently they are guilty of having the words 'elderly' 'suicide' and 'OECD' in a separate sentences rather than in one.
However, I'm willing to bet that there are dozens of articles on elderly benefits, pensions, health care, family situations, changing dynamics and so on, which seem to be the root causes of this. Since that is the case, it appears the Korean media is more focused on the cause, rather than on merely treating the symptom of suicide.
That being said, the larger issue of elderly care is going to explode in Korea and become a major social issue, one that the government and society is seemingly kicking the can to some degree on. |

More happy horseshit from sr. Your first sentence is a supposition which your second sentence then claims as fact.
Your posts are as greasy as that pizza you used to cook up. |

As in 10-1 in favor of articles about K-Pop and Psy over issues that matter? |

So, you're saying that an article from 3 years ago and one from earlier this year are adequate coverage of the issue?
Uh, oh, a K-Pop star clipped her toenails yesterday. Front page headlines. |

Dude, its for profit media. Stories like this, minus a scandal, tend not to be the biggest sellers. Not saying its right, but that's the way it is.
If the Korean media ran 5 stories on this tomorrow, two weeks from now people would be complaining that they're covering the .001% of the elderly population that decides to whack themselves and not focusing on issue X (which was probably covered a week ago). |

People that don't read the Korean edition newspapers arguing over whether a story is covered or not in Korean newspapers. |

You really think anyone on Dave's is going through all the news outlets and reading articles in Korean to see if they cover the elderly suicide rate? Ain't nobody got time for that. But I get it, people enjoy arguing on the internet. |
