I have just been told by the "police in Canada - RCMP" that they do not give out CRC's anymore - go to the nearest Canadian Embassy for this. (That's Seoul, Korea for all CDN expats in Korea) This makes no sense to me??? Can anyone confirm/dispute etc??? |

Last summer I was in Canada and asked the RCMP for a CRC. They said they didn't want to do it and told me to go to the local police station to get one. The local police station did the CRC. Make sure you ask for the vunrable sector search because that will get you the RCMP check in addition to the local police check. There is an additional charge for the VSS. It was more expensive than their website said it was.
I don't know anything about the embassy doing this sort of thing. Give them a call and ask. |

If you are in an area serviced by the RCMP then they do it at the counter.
IF you are in an area serviced by a civilian or provincial police service then you have to get it done through them.
If you are in an area serviced by a civilian service and want an RCMP check then get it done by mail. Electronic Civil Fingerprinting will speed up the process significantly.

Do not do this. The VSS does not apply to jobs abroad. |

There's one version of the criminal record search that doesn't even require fingerprinting, they do it right at the counter for you. I forget the name of the search. I You'll be in and out in 25 minutes if they aren't too busy.
22 weeks if RCMP fingerprints, 3 days for an approved agency to do an electronic search.

In my case it did not matter what the VSS meant or what or where it applied to.
I was told at the local police station that I had to apply for it if I wanted a paper from the RCMP. If not they would only do the "local check" which they said included the RCMP records. I assume they have consolidated record data bases. However I knew the Koreans wanted a paper from the RCMP, so I applied for it. I knew if I gave the Koreans anything that didn't have RCMP on it they might reject it. So I applied for the VSS as instructed by the secretary/officer at the counter. I got 2 papers back from them. One was a local police check and the other was the RCMP check. Both said the same thing, no criminal record.
My area is serviced by both the RCMP and the local police. The RCMP at the counter of their detachment told me to go to the local police station if I wanted a criminal record check. They did not want to do it.
I don't know if the embassy does such a service but it would be a good idea if they did.
Oh btw, as someone else mentioned electronic fingerprinting speeds up the process big time. Doing a CRC and getting fingerprints done while in Korea is a pain in the butt. |

The embassy will have nothing to do with a CBC.
They simply refer you to the RCMP website.

Thank you to all who replied on this.
I do not require fingerprinting for the CRC. The last time I had aa CRC done I was not fingerprinted. As someone mentioned on this thread there exists a CRC does not require fingerprinting.
That's the one I want. How do you get it?
I am understanding it correctly that going to a police station other than the RCMP is the better option??? |

Depends on where in Canada you are.
If you are NOT in Ontario or Quebec then just go to the nearest local RCMP detachment and they can do it over the counter - usually same day.
Do NOT go to the provincial divisional headquarters (E.Div, K.Div, C.Div, O.Div, etc); you will be sent away.

That's right!
Just rock up to the local detachment service counter and a public service employee will take care of it for you. Explain that you are in need of the criminal record search, the one that does not require finger printing, and that you are using it to get a TEFL position in Korea.
The women that do it have done dozens, hundreds or thousands of them and will know what you need.
Depending on what time you go into the detachment, you could be out of there within 30 minutes. It's fast.
Do it the old fashioned way, or from overseas, and mess with fingerprints and forms with the RCMP, you'll be waiting 5 - 6 months for your criminal record check. |

Yeah..there was a lot of confusion when Korea changed the law to needing a federal check. But, immigration now seems to understand that any local or city anyways can do use the same federal database the RCMP do.
Yet, you will still hear recruiters requiring the RCMP check…
annoying.!! |

I have been stressing about this too. I saw examples of other Canadian cities handing out police checks that looked like a nicely typed letter. My city's CRC, however, comes back on the same form that you have to fill out to request the CRC, just with a couple checkmarks saying nothing was found and the signature of the person in charge along with an embossed stamp. It does say a search was done of the RCMP database, however the form just looks like an application form and even I had trouble seeing exactly where it said that I was clear. Anyone else have experiences like this and would you know if immigration will accept that?
Thanks!
