화랑 - why is this stuff so rare? The cost at E-mart is under 6K won for 375ml. That's comparable to decent nihonshu, but to my taste at least, this is a pretty excellent rice wine. Why do even financially well-off Korean people insist on drinking cheap beer and soju? I'm no expert on the Japanese market, but it seems like if 화랑 were sold in Japan, it could be pretty mainstream. |

In social drinking sutuations, Koreans seem to prefer the extreme edges of the pricing brackets: either they want to get drunk as cheaply as possible, or they splurge on expensive whiskey or the like. Given how much some of these people drink a month, paying triple per bottle (2k vs 6k) could actually add up too. I've seen houses with huge piles of empty soju bottles outside.
Group habit probably also plays a role: younger participants are often wary of making suggestions, and older folks are often already in the cheap soju/beer pattern. |

Well said. I've seen the same. |
