It seems all the time that most of the Korean companies and Hagwons can't pay their employees on time. Is this the Korean norm of slave labor to foriegners who work for hagwons??? They tell you the payment is on this certain day of every month, but when the payment day is near they tend to make any excuse to pay late.
In America or anywhere else, this is a violation of civil rights, but here in Korea, it's normal, I have to ask, why are Koreans so stubborn when it comes to payment too foriegn teachers, we literally have to say "When am I going to get paid", to me it seems no higher authority can't do or say anything to hagwon owners. The are no diffrent than North Korean Dictator, Kim Jung Un"
If all the foriegner here in Korea banded together and fought about this major problem, things would change. Is there anyone out there feels the way I feel!! |

File a grievance with the labor board. Comparing late pay to slave labor is hyperbolic and disingenuous. Late pay IS a problem, but it is not slave labor, nor is it murder, or human trafficking, or anthrax, or Hitler. |

Yeah but it's highly disrespectful and irritating especially to people that have money deadlines. |

Problem is most 22 year olds coming here won't protest or band together, they'll just cry about their feelings and either run home or run to another job. If they went to the business and refused to leave until the money was in theri hand screaming and acting emotional in front of everyone, I bet the boss would get the money to them pretty quickly to avoid the embarassment. Just go nuclear and make a big of loss of face for the d-bag. |

Flashback!
I thought this thread was a resurrection from years ago! It seems every once in a while there is a call to form a union or a group or band together.
How thinks never change.
OP how about checking out the defunct group called ATEK.
This is something that is not going to go anywhere.
Like weigookin74 mentions the problem is the base of people. They are at times shallow, temporary, and selfish.
Had to add - rights! Oh give me a break. Yea it sucks not to be paid but how the hell is this a civil right. Maybe a basic labor right. It is like the blacklist post someone complained about their hagwon breaking human rights! I know you are likely being rhetorical but wow. |

Hagwons can't pay their employees on time. |
They usually have about a month to pay up. There is no way you are going to get a group to fight for immediate distribution of funds for a business. You are not a creditor or shareholder in the company. You don't have dibs.
Bailouts is an extreme example, but it illustrates why the government is not going to be on your side as an employee. They want companies to make money. If the hagwon can get new students or pay from previous months, then they can keep the business alive. To get paid regularly, you need to work at a big school.
It's a tradeoff. Work at an established school and make very few decisions or gamble with a smaller school that might be willing to deal with schedule changes, apartment arrangements, or transportation issues. |

Not getting paid on time happens to Koreans too. As a matter of fact, my wife left her last job with them still owing her money. The really bad thing is that her old boss still calls or messages her every couple of months saying he's going to pay her what he owes, and yet, he still hasn't paid off the full balance and it's been over a year since she left. I'm not saying it's right, but even now it seems that she gets paid more on days that aren't her "pay" day than she does on it. |

That is absolutely true, and certainly worth leaving a job over -- I was pointing out that the OP's hyperbolic response detracts from a valid point. |

But she's not on an E2 Visa and her apartment isn't owned by her employer. |

I don't see your point, the OP was talking about being paid on time. I would also venture to say that most E2 visa holders also aren't paying their own rent so how again does that relate to being paid on time? Of course if you're talking about the ones who do pay their own rent, I then see your point. |

I've never been paid late, or personally known anyone to be paid laid. Obviously people aren't gonna post about how they were paid on time, but many who are paid late, will post about it. |

It happens a lot. I met so many people it happened to. Many you don't know many people? (You are isolated out in the sticks somewhere?)

Getting paid late isn't always a sign of some sort of evil nature. It can definitely be a sign of incompetence or impending bankruptcy though. If you are getting paid late, it means that it is time to start looking for a way out. |
