I've also heard that the traditional "Western" diet plays a role in early balding, and not from some crackpot on the street, either, I remember reading it in some articles a while back. Google it yourself if you're interested in it.

Yeah, I assumed an actual certified medical doctor would know what they are talking about even if it is Korea and myths like fan death exist. But it's not doctors telling us those things. Traditionally Asian men had thicker hair than we did until a much older age. Their roots are deeper than ours meaning you'll never see a bald 25 year old Korean man, but that around the edges some slight receeding.

A few years ago, lots of younger Korean women really hated it. But, I think nowadays they might be more accepting of it as a shaved head because they're use to seeing more images of it, seeing more bald teachers around, and having travelled more. That said, they would not accept it on a Korean man in his 20's or 30's.

Just keep it neat and have a sense of humor. I started balding quite early and had a chip on my shoulder about it when I first got here, and subsequently found myself in no end of awkward moments because of it.

I just make comments about how much time and money I save, and it gets a few laughs. That's the end of it.

A Western diet causes baldness?

Im assuming from this statement, that observations have been made of a uniformity in korea with regard to diet ( eg rice and kimchi for most meals). it would be natural therefore to assume that others from different cultures would also all eat the same foods in an unvarying manner. At least if all it took for scientific fact were your own personal experiences and opinion.

What is a western diet again? I forgot. And do all people living outside of Asia eat it?

And all along i thought baldness was caused only by wearing baseball caps.

Wigs my friends. Wigs and lots of them... Look more closely at all those Korean men in their 30's 40's +.. That you thought were so lucky to not suffer hair loss... Look again - very closely ...

Some great Korea wig facts here

http://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/news/article/article.aspx?aid=2975758

Can't believe wigs were a third of all ROK exports at one time...

Korean hair is prized by wig manufacturers.

One of those TV shows about Koreans succeeding overseas showed a guy with a big wigmaking business in Africa, using Korean hair.

I was just wondering, will I face any difficulty there having a shaved head and a short, trimmed beard?

Facial hair isn't cool in Korea.

This thread reminds me of Larry David in CYE talking about hate crimes against the bald community, and who can or can't be reasonably considered part of the community.

I thought Koreans believed acid rain caused hair loss. That's what I've heard from umpteen Koreans. But I guess the Western food theory is more emotionally satisfying to them. They get to knock something foreign while, implicitly, praising the 'healthy and empowering' qualities of Korean food. Confused

Regardless of reasons or causes, baldness is less prevalent here than amongst other races. It is happeneing more nowadays amongst younger Korean men than it ever has before. It's still not bald, but hair receding and thinning in spots.

Whereas, lots of western dudes go bald in their 30's. Some are bald by 25. Others start going downhill after 27 or 28. I was thinning in my late 20's and was able to hide it by moving the hair around. Then, low and behold, one day, I couldn't hide it anymore. Started buzzing it really close on the sides hoping to make it look like a really close crew cut. Sort of worked for a very short time. But, it came upon me so quickly and just before coming here, it was a period of denial my first couple of years here.

While I had heard (at least before) that Korean women really hate baldness, it's probably more accepted on a Western guy in 2013 than it was in say 2007 or 2008. Korean guys bald at 28, they're SOL.

There is a Korean professor in our uni who is maybe mid 40s. He is bald and has shaved his head. I think he looks good.
But I agree that young Koreans who lose their hair have it tough.
