I have to agree with EZ.
Runners are great if the school is terrible.
It will make the school look extremely bad, and possibly the
employees will be able to benefit from a nicer
boss.
So the other teachers might have more work until a replacement is found.
It would be a mistake if they blame the teacher who left and not a BAD employer. They lose their bargaining power. Complaining about work seems to be pretty normal for Koreans to do. When in Rome.....
Many teachers will complain about the teacher who pulled the runner, usually to kiss up to the boss.
Of course if the employer is not a complete ass then you can forget what I wrote. And it gets even more confusing because people have different tolerances for BS. Someone fresh out of uni for example will most likely put up with the craziness and actually believe that the Korean employers know how to teach and what it is like to be a native esl teacher.

That's a fact! Laughing
Have the balls...be a stand up person...and walk out the front door.
Anyone who does a midnight run for any reason...will also do the same back home....millions of workers everyday somewhere...just don't show up for work or walk off the job! Sure..they have mitigating circumstances....but still...many folks will be a stand up person and tell the boss man/woman....hey...I quit....I am outta here! While other will do the mid night run. Those people I would not trust.
Unless you have done a crime...immigration is not going to prevent you from leaving! The school owners can squawk all they want...threaten all they want....but they can't prevent you from leaving unless they claim you did a crime......
I have spent a few decades in this country...and I have had my share of jobs....never did the mid night run though....I have told a few school owners that..."your place sucks and you're a jerk" and I quit....but I tell them to their face. And not once have I had a problem with immigration on getting a new visa.
Problems we encounter...are the problems we create...and a lot of it is due to culture, language barriers and personal feelings.
The quality of your communication is linked with the quality of your upbringing, life, health and relationships.

I don't think this is necessarily true. The situations are usually totally different. For example, in January of 2006, I turned in a two week notice (typical in the USA) at a job where I had worked for years. My boss asked me to work until he could get my replacement trained, and I continued working until June. But I knew I would be paid, and in the USA, I've always handled all of my bills myself. Bosses don't get involved with that back home.

When I worked at Wonderland, I knew I wouldn't get paid if I gave a proper notice. I wasn't being paid in full already. Plus, the boss was taking money out of our pay to pay our utilities, but was pocketing the money, which resulted in utilities cutoffs. When you're sitting at home with no electricity, or no gas for warm showers during cold weather, or no water because of nonpayment of bills when your boss has deducted the money from your pay, the last thing on your mind is doing the 60 day notice listed in your contract.

If you can't hack it in korea then you can't hack it anywhere and will most likely be a failure at life.

Nope. Same Hokie as normal. Now as one of the previous posters mentioned if your employer is a total jerk and the work conditions are crap...ok fine, leave, but show some guts (and get the satisfaction of seeing the look on your bosses face) when you quit and walk out the door. Don't just sneak off into the night like a rat.

Either way, you're still quitting without a notice and leaving the other foreign teachers in the exact same situation as a midnight runner.

Me and the other guy were the only foreigners there. He was convinced we'd be fired. I didn't want to but went along with it. It was a wonderland but to me seemed fine .

Dude how about stop being a liar and posting BS stories. No one wants to hear your BS or trying to write up foreign teachers as a bad thing because you want one of us to write someone negative so you can write about it. I have an idea, how about going and playing in traffic? You could go pound sand, or eat some raw chicken....The possibilities are ENDLESS.

You sound like one of the many opinionated Americans me and my pal RA met in Saudi Arabia, telling everyone how to teach and how everyone is a bitch because of this, that and the other - and the next week, they were gone.

All we heard was 'yapyapyap' and the next thing was 'Hey, where is Hank? I haven't seen him around'.

'He is back in Korea, he flipped out man because the local Kudu didn't sell pork schnitzels'

or

'His students threw him out of the classroom and locked him outside'

Saudi Arabia has more runners than the Boston Marathon.

I bet any money you would run.

I work with Americans everyday in Saudi and they don't tell anybody how to teach. In fact the nationalities that I generally don't like don't tell anybody how to teach either.

Doing Midnight runs in Saudi Arabia is not very easy. Unlike Korea you have to either post considerable money to get a multiple exit/entry stamp or you have to have a guarantor - that you would make trust you - then run out on.

New rule: Only Americans can talk crap about other Americans. If you other folks haven't noticed yet, we don't need any help in that department and are doing just fine by ourselves. Thanks anyway for your concern.
