For real though, you gotta wonder why the posters who sign on to Dave's every day just to slam Korea are still here in Korea. I mean, if I had a co-worker talk shit about the US everyday, you bet your ass I'd ask him why they moved here and why don't they go home.

Couldn't you say that same thing about a lot of things?

"If you don't like your job, why don't you quit?"
"If you don't like Homeland, why do you watch it?"
"If you hate your wife, why don't you divorce her?"
"If you think you could do better, why don't you try it?"

Questions like these just switch the attention onto the speaker rather than deal with the issue.

Yeah, you could. These are all choices. If you hate Homeland, why are you watching it? If you hate your job, try to find a new one. If you hate Korea enough to bitch about it everyday on Dave's, then why not go back home? Plenty of other people do it.

I don't hate Korea at all. I think it's a great country with a lot going for it. I don't mind finding the negative aspects of living here, or the negative aspects of the culture and discussing them from time to time though.

If you don't like the way people talk on Dave's why not find a forum where no one says anything bad about Korea?

What happens on Dave's is not a discussion. It's a circlejerk of the same complaints with the same users over and over. Which is why I'm curious why those users (not you) would choose to stay.

hiamnotcool's screen name doesn't jump out to me as one of the big bashers the way an atwood's or Smithington's does.

If drunken memory serves, I think he's posted at least some favorable comments.

But yeah, I think "Why are you still here?" is a fair question for people who CONSTANTLY harp about everything here being worse than back home and that this country is terrible all around. They've been talking like that for years, yet they keep staying. I know some have packed up and left, but others keep staying. I don't know why. At that point you have to wonder if they are misanthropes who just complain about everything, no matter where they are and are constitutionally incapable of blaming themselves for negative outcomes in their lives.

Korea is not an easy place to live in sometimes because some Korean people can be infuriating. This is just an easy escape from that frustration. Air your grievance and let off some steam. I have posted some shitty generalizations after a bad day, but it doesn't mean I am a hater. It is good to vent now and then.
The type of posters that get on my nerves are the ones with snooty superiority issues. The self-congratulating smug bastards who believe that they are on a higher intellectual plane to all Korean people, or the culture they hail from is far superior. These people need a reality check to take a look at their situation.

While venting is certainly understandable, I'm not sure its really excusable.

If Koreans "vent" about NETs or foreigners, would we just excuse it as such? If someone who worked at a bar went online to vent about some foreign customers who s/he felt behaved badly, and started ranting about Western culture, would we dismiss it as "venting" or would we say s/he was some ignorant Korean racist?

I don't care for K-Netizan "venting" or Korean Sentry "venting" and I don't care for a lot of the "venting" that goes on here. That's not to say there isn't a way to do it, and some posters are more restrained and open in their vents than others (which go into the greyer area of 'frustrated observations' or 'impassioned grievances'), but I find it really sad that for a bunch of people who complain about 'racism' and narrow-mindedness, those very attitudes constitute the average "venting" on here.

There is definitely a lot of irony in some of the complaints here. Some of the biggest whiners here moan about Korea being racist and bigoted, while being racist and bigoted themselves. A lot of these posters come across as having serious entitlement issues, or just need to grow a set and get on with it. Learn how to cope instead of lashing out like a spoiled child.
However, I understand the need to vent. Sometimes people just write sweeping statements in anger without thinking, but they know they are generalizing. Pointing out that it is a generalization is a but patronizing.
If someone says "Koreans are the worst drivers in the world" after nearly getting run over at a crossing, they probably know that not all Koreans are bad drivers.
Anyway, going back to what someone else pointed out, I often wonder why people who truly hate Korea stay here. There are other options.

That was my first question when joining Dave's and remains so...

You guys need to wise up; this is the century of Asia. Whatever dump you come from back in the Anglosphere is in dead cat bounce mode. The natives don’t care about adopting your failed practices, shocking as that may sound.

I have worked with foreigners in Korea who were hardcore racists. After many years they are still in Korea. I'm assuming they have a slight mental illness because they complained endlessly yet never left. Rolling Eyes

So far, it hasn't been, and many a pundit who claimed so has now backed off that prediction.

If the natives don't care about "failed practices," why is the U.S. military still in the ROK, and why is the ROK buying up U.S. military hardware? Why is China dependent on western Europe for its new military hardware?

What about all those smartphones that have so captivated the natives? They've adopted that like a long-lost brother.

That's coffee they're serving in all those Starbucks you see everywhere in Asia, not tea. Wake up and smell the caffeine.

No one can foretell what will happen in the next 87 years, but Asian dominance is looking far less likely than it was at the turn of the century.

I read in a wealth building book one of the best ways to become rich is too associate with those who are already successful. In that way, KimchiNinja is a valuable asset to this online community.

Good question, optik404. Why do you stay on Dave's if you hate it so much? What are you getting out of reading posts and responding to them? How does it benefit your life? You think by being an apologist e-warrior for Korea you are somehow defending the honor of your Korean wife? That's pretty pathetic man. Get offline (for the sake of your marriage).
