That seems way too high to me. The average UK salary is 26000 pounds a year, which at the current rate of exchange would be 3752767 Korean won a month. A whole million won a month less, though the UK economy is around 6th or 7th in the world, compared to Korea's 15th/16th. |

Good to see I'm overall average and not just teaching/education average. |

The UK has more people, so it makes sense their overall economy would be slightly bigger than South Korea's. On a per capita basis, they are about neck and neck.
Overall wages for Koreans are going up.
Overall wages for NETs are going down (and will continue to go down).
Talk to any lifer. They will tell you, "When I first got here, I made more money than most of my Korean friends. Now I make less money than most of my Korean friends."

What is causing it you may ask? The locals got better at English so we are less relevant/less needed. Also, technology changed the game big time. It is easy to get a cheap Filipino on Skype now.

Very pointless website. It just uses data provided by people who answer their survey. 32 people posted their salaries. I don't think you can get an accurate measurement. I can assure you that the average salary in Korea is no where near 4.8 million. |

So why is their average wage a million won more?

I've no idea how much my Korean friends make and wouldn't be tactless enough to ask. |

So in other words, I'm right.

Oh, so I'm not supposed to talk about the market overall, just individual examples? OK, I heard there is this dude named fustiancorduroy who makes a lot of money. He is an example of someone who has become successful teaching ESL in Korea.

The average NET is not rich compared to the average Korean. That is a myth (that needs to die).
But that's just average. Although the market is becoming worse for most, there are some standout illustrious individuals such as The Urban Myth, edwardcatflap, fustiancorduroy, and PatrickGHBusan who can "make it work". |

Do you think that marginally qualified people (which the majority are) teaching esl in Korea deserve more than what is the standard? |

The fact that the OP posted this under the title he did kind of reiterates this, if it's based on an online survey. |

This I think is on point. I'd extend "marginally qualified" to "clueless" in many cases (after many classroom observations).
Sincere smiling young white folk with BAs dont automatically warrant middle class wages nor should they. Prove themselves, then theres something to negotiate.
Hiring practices here are questionable but Koreans arent stupid. |

Even your pay was cut, schwa (no more level 1++), and your vacation was cut as well. What do you think about that? |

A couple of points..
First off, I don't think anybody can really take these results seriously..
Only 32 people have been recorded here. You can see all of the individual stats for each including experience, age, nationality etc..
There is nothing to differentiate the person who works ten years in banking to 1 year in something else. It's not in any way a fair comparison..
A lot of the 32 are not even Korean- So to say well these are an accurate reflection on the average salary of the population here is downright wrong..
It's kind of interesting to look at other countries in the survey though as at least a lot more people are taken into account.. ( more than 32 anyway).
You can be betting your bottom Won that the average salary of people working in Korea is way less than the figure offered here.
This kind of thread is great for the whole oh ESL in Korea is dying v ESL in Korea is fine debate.
Surely no one can deny the market is diminishing.. (Way more teachers here for perhaps a smaller market)
For one- as an E2'er it's far more difficult (illegal and less demand) to get extra income on the side to prop up pay..
Then even if the visa were an F6 or F5 or something- making huge amounts isn't as easy either- pay rates are staying the same or just marginally increasing on the whole.
There are always exceptions to every rule but on the whole-making a way above the median of your average worker in Korea is not as easy as it was before.
I am still in the there is enough to be made here for the foreseeable future tho..
Teaching English here can be pretty lucrative still. |

If anything, I'd say that Korea overpaid in both salaries and benefits to people that don't exactly have much to qualify them in the past. What has happened in the last few years is no surprise. |

I'm out of here soon or maybe still looking for a soft post-retirement position in Sokcho. Found my happiness here. Its been a rewarding ride.
No argument, conditions generally are worsening. |

How do you work that out? I told you I don't ask my Korean friends, or any friends come to that, about their salaries. Are you accusing me of lying? Asking people how much they earn may be normal in America but in some cultures it's not considered polite.
As Saram says, salaries for NEWBS have gone down or stagnated but why do you keep bellyaching about it? You have an MA and. CELTA, go somewhere else if it bothers you that much. Maybe a place with an easier language to learn eh? |
