I haven't made much in the line of contributions about Jeju so here goes.

Here in Seogwipo there is a new Mc Donalds with a drive through.

Starbucks is about to open their coffee shop here very soon. They are putting the finishing touches on it.

The Chinese tourists who had been invading this place over the last year are all gone. Weird.

Surfing is becoming more popular here at the main beach.

There is a considerable amount of development and construction going on here now. It'll be interesting to see what the Koreans are building.

Probably over-priced apartment buildings!

I'm not an engineer but my guess are new pensions, (big ones). Several new coffee shops too (big ones also). More apartment buildings have sprung up. I guess what it all means is that lots of money is flowing into the area and not out. There is a major construction site across from the E Mart covering a large piece of land. There is a considerable uptick in activity.

Roads in many places are being widened, and new hiking trails everywhere.

Some friends of ours (mixed couple) recently bought land in Jeju and are having a house built.

They are saying in their part of Jeju, the development is mostly houses as opposed to apt.

For the rest of the island, I have no idea.

That is true. Many new houses are being built on former orange farms and they are rather nice ones.

Must be a localized thing then.

Isn't the new naval base being built on Jeju-do? If so, then they are probably building housing for military families etc.

That McDonald's was there this summer.

I've heard lots of retirees started pensions in Jeju over the last couple of years and that many of them lost their shirts. Know anything about that?

That I'm not sure about. I tend to stay away from that area because there is a constant demonstration in front of the place that has been there for years and has no sign of letting up.

Depends on the day. Sometimes good, sometimes not. There is a monument on the big beach now to a surfer who died there last year. So I guess there are waves big enough to kill a surfer.
