The average salary for a mechanical engineer just happens to be exactly 4.7 per month (the figure we were discussing)? That's a funny coincidence.

One thing we can agree on though is the average Korean worker salary is now more than average ESLer salary. (This wasn't the case in the past.) EFL teaching wages for Westerners haven't kept pace with the economic growth of Korea. In fact, adjusted for inflation, they went down. (T_T)

Yeah those are probably roughly accurate salaries for those jobs, but that average is not meant to be taken seriously. As was already posted you want to look at national income per capita (PPP).

KR is around $31,000 USD.

Maybe its average salary amongst salaried employees or office workers or something. Other than that I have no idea how they got such a number.

The valid comparison would be with full-time wage earners with collage degrees. The GNI figure includes a lot of people who, in fairness, you really shouldn't be comparing yourself to. If you take it a step further and include only wage earners with degrees from outside of Korea - the most accurate comparison - you may not feel so good about yourselves.

Most Koreans don't make a ton of money. They live hand to mouth like the rest of us. Those stats are definitely skewed.

Well first, I would think this thread should be in the job related forum.

That said, here is my story:

I have been in Korea for ages. Much longer than when I became a member of this site. So, I have "seen it all".

I had a friend in USA, but not very close, so I have had no contact with him until a few days ago. He told me that his son has a BA in German and an MA in TESOL. Both from good schools with high grades.

He asked me what his son could get with his degrees.

I told him there is a good chance that his son's BA + MA+ 700 won would get him a small can of Coca-Cola.

And now we all know how clever you are.

FWIW, he sounds on sort of the same path as my grandfather who had great grades and studied German for his BA in International Studies (Harvard), did an MA in TESOL (Columbia), and taught abroad for a number of years before doing his PhD in linguistics (Cornell). He ended up as a really well-known linguist, so maybe it's this guy's kid's path as well?

This is a reminder that the values are based on what people voluntarily input onto the website. I put in that I am a pet sitter making 10 M a month.

I looked at this site. There is one key factor that I haven't seen anybody mention on this thread: most of the people who entered their salaries on that site are EXPATS, and expats tend to get paid more than locals for the work they do. Considering that, I think having the average salary around 5 million won a month is likely accurate.

I must also say that this site makes me feel good about my job. I don't make as much money as some people on that site claim, but I am above the average and I work only 5 or 6 hours a day, 4 days a week, whereas most people there work around 40 to 45 hours a week. So I guess I'm doing okay.

Thanks for telling us, that's great to know! Although you didn't tell us exactly how much you make a week on this occasion. Why don't you tell us the precise amount so we can all feel even more special about your achievement!

Come on, Edward. There is no need for me to do that. I mean, it's not like I'm trying to boast or anything....
