News is filtering through of another budget cut to GEPIK.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/gepik/

Some believe that this puts pressure on hagwon jobs making them more competitive.

To me that is true only of newbies. Those already in GEPIK are able to move to elementary schools or other schools were funding is intact.

Some people simply go home since Korea is only a year long experience for them.

Is anyone on this board actually being in the position of being forced into a hagwon. Is there anyone going to a hagwon and relishing the opportunity?

Or are there those who feel "forced" i.e. they wouldn't be doing it except GEPIK is downsizing?

Doesn't open. Why don't you tell you more about what it says? How many positions are being cut? Hopefully if the US economy finally recovers, it'll keep some folks from coming over and cancel out some of this.

"After checking out that list, it looks like a huge cut."

Not true. This time, elementary school jobs are being cut as well.

"The last time there was GEPIK budget cuts in middle and high the saving grace was that teachers could switch in to elementary. No such saving grace this time."

It's a closed group. You have to ask permission to join it. It is old news about the cut. We talked about it here - http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=230676

The cut is around 50% of GEPIK funding. City funding remains. However I think a lot of teachers are now being officially informed they won't be able to stay at their schools.

Completely agree. If you cannot find/get a public school job then try another country. It's not like Korea is the only option.
I guess if your heart is set on coming to Korea and you cannot get a public school job, then a Hagwon gig is the only option yes. But as ibeattheborg said not all Hagwons are bad.

The reason behind the elementary public school cuts:

"With the government promising all kinds of social welfare programs (which they have made no provision for), the resistance to tax increases and the slow down in the economy being brought about by companies like Samsung and Hyundai's falling profits (they earn more than 30% of Korea's money), we are fast becoming a luxury they can ill afford."

Samsung had record breaking revenue and profit last quarter. The cuts may be due to the slow-down, but Samsung is doing just fine.

Too bad this will just equal more Hakwon jobs per capita. Just have to remember that overall elementary enrollment is down quite a bit from where it was 10-15 years ago, so there are less jobs overall.

Less jobs overall coupled with less foreigners here.
