So I fractured my humerus a couple weeks ago after first getting here. I was being an idiot, let's just say that. I haven't gotten a foreign registration card, so I don't have insurance. If I decide to get surgery (which I definitely might need) I won't be able to get registered with a pre-existing condition. Any thoughts? Suggestions? I guess my main concern is with the insurance. Is there still a way to get the deductible not being registered but working. The humerus might take 6 weeks before a nonunion is determined (as per google) so I will probably just wait it out, then make a decision. Thanks . . .

Ouch. I once fractured my ulna (broke the tip of my elbow clean through) & it was about the most painful thing I ever experienced. I was offered a cast to see what happens or the option of surgery to get it pinned right away. I chose the cast. It knitted just fine.
You've got time to wait & see. Trust your body to heal itself & go super-gentle on your arm in the interim & hopefully you'll have the same luck. Best wishes, sincerely. |

Ye, it is quite a nasty fracture though . . . I am hoping it heals (eating healthy etc . . ) but I am just considering my options in the interim . . . |

I got myself a nice little double avulsion fracture on my elbow while in Korea (Thanks, Mr. Awesome sped off after causing it, BMW driver for that!).
I got soft casted, then hard casted 2 weeks later, then robotic arm braced 2 weeks after that. NHIC covered just basic stuff like X-rays and consultations from what I remember. Most expenses came out of my pocket.
You need to get it taken care of properly first and foremost. Worry about the insurance coverage/lack of later. |

Must be American...
The NHIC does NOT restrict or refuse coverage based on "pre-existing" conditions.
Coverage and premiums (as a percentage of income - currently about 3% of salary) are the same for all individuals regardless of health condition, prior conditions, current conditions, dependent family members (who would also have coverage) or income level.
That said... x-rays are cheap even without insurance.

I wonder if they should have compulsory lobotomies for anti-Semites, racists and anti-Americans. Insurance wouldn't be needed for that. |

That sucks. I'd get a second or even third opinion if you have the coin to do so.
LOL. My injury happened about 4.5 years ago, and my left biceps is still smaller than the right. |

If you have an ARC it is a non issue. Fill in the form and get your booklet in the mail a couple weeks later.
If you don't have an ARC then you will need to wait till you get one to get registered and receive coverage. If you are on an E2 then coverage is backdated to your entry into Korea (but so are the premiums). You can get a refund of payments made that would have been covered.

Anyone can go into a Korean hospital to get treatment.
You'll find that hospital costs are quite cheap, thus the numbers of medical tourists.
Korean hospitals, however, require payment up front. They do take major credit cards. |

I have found that for safety and billing reasons it is best to have a healthy friend stop by to make sure that every thing is alright, and that you are receiving proper care. |

Firstly, he doesn't have an ARC card. It would still be an issue, there is a 3 month waiting period starting at the ARC issue date for a foreigner who registers themselves for health insurance. He would have to get the insurance through his company, for it to start immediately. |

I just spent 5 weeks in the hospital and 2 months away from work from breaking 3 bones in my leg.
I saw several patients that didn't have insurance while I was in the hospital. They would come in a day before the operation and then leave a day after the operation. |

Once I get a phone I will call the NHIC and see what they say.
And Byrddogs - I did get a second opinion. That guy suggested I had dislocated my elbow. (Maybe he only has the elbow model construct and so suggests this to all his patients?) After he saw the x-rays he asked me if I knew my humerus was fractured . . . uhh . . . yeah . . . I did . . . |

Hence, why I recommended another opinion. First, second, third blah blah seem to all have a different diagnoses. |
