|

There seems to have been another hack attack revealing full details of accounts of KB, Nonghyup, and Woori banks:

I don't read much Korean though. Can anyone elaborate on further details, or find confirmation from other news sources or your own bank account? |

I'm not worried about anyone knowing I have $200 in the bank. |

Personal information for over 15 million accounts has been exposed.
I think it's credit card information. |

NH, Kookmin and lottee banks.
One of the people who over saw all of these banks sold on the information.
At least it isn't NK this time! |

I have Kookmin. They have a tool on their website that let's you check if your card data was affected.... but foreign registration numbers don't work. What a shocker! The majority of my money is with KEB, so I'm not too worried, but I have nothing but headaches whenever I venture over to the Korean side of the internet. |

Nobody lost any money.
All the same those banks will have to change credit cards and details for all their customers.
It was stolen so easily too. That is the issue. |

Does this in any way affect foreigners who don't own a credit card? I have a KB card, but decided to get rid of my credit card years ago. |

Maybe they go back to putting information on paper and storing it in a filing cabinet.
I know of a number of foreign companies in Korea who do just that. They put their important information on paper, behind a locked door with armed guards. No leaks with that system. |

Any decent security system would raise red flags when someone wants to download millions of un-encrypted files containing personal information on to a single USB storage device.
It seems more difficult for a customer to access and change their own data than for an employee to gain access to the entire customer database.
Security experts need to redesign and re-think what they are doing. I had to download about 40 things to access one Korean stock account and two online banks. For my 3 Canadian banks and one stock account the amount of things downloaded was 1 trading platform. |

You're telling me. A Korean citizenship holding foreigner can't even access the ATM machine in his or her own native language.
A message from the expat banking center from Shinhan Bank:
Quote: |
Thank you for getting in touch. Our department listened to the message you sent us.
With regards to the foreign language services available on our ATM's , this service is intended for - and thus only available to - those registered as a foreign resident in Korea. If you are registered as a foreign resident, then please notify one of our branches who will change your status (if need be) on our systems
In the past, Korean residents were allowed to use the foreign language service available however due to security threats, the Financial Supervisory Services (FSS) decided to change the regulations and make the service only available to foreign residents; this was also based on the premise that Korean nationals do not need to use the foreign services either.
We apologize that you felt this practice is discriminatory however it was implemented in the interests of security.
On a final note, whilst we invite and appreciate your comments, please note that is not permitted to record our staff without their prior consent.
We hope this information is useful. |

Yes.

“About half of the Korean population’s information was leaked. So we think it’s likely that almost all foreigners’ data was also leaked,” another FSS official said.
The official added that the current reaction to the massive leak focuses on Koreans, and that they did not have enough time to take care of foreigner customers. |

They say it was done by an outside contractor. I'm surprised they would outsource a job with so much sensitive information on so many people. |
