One out of four Seoul citizens obese: report
Nearly 25 percent of adult citizens in Seoul are obese amid a lack of exercise, with the proportion on the rise for the fourth consecutive year in 2012, a report showed Thursday.
According to the report by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, 23.4 percent out of 23,165 surveyed citizens aged 19 or older were obese in 2012, with 31.6 percent among male citizens and 16.5 percent among women.

Yeah, I don't put much faith in that stat.
I had my physical a few months back - doc called me obese. I've got a 6 pack… seriously. How can someone be obese and showing abs?
They just use a BMI or weight/height rail of "norms". If you don't fit in those norms, you are obese. |
That's it. They're looking at scale weight only without considering that muscle weighs more than fat. It shows how little information there is in Korea about obesity. When it comes time to address it expect a great deal of misinformation. |

As a general rule of thumb, if you're much over 80kg, regardless of height, frame, or even muscle to fat ratio (which I don't think they even bother to check), Korean doctors are going to say you need to lose weight. If you're over 90kg, they will say you shouldn't even try cardio exercise without seeking medical advice first. |

I guess that life is so "great" in South Korea that every one can enjoy a great live of excess and become fat. |

I haven't read the previous 10 pages of replies, but a lot of the Westerners you can meet in Itaewon don't actually live here. And among those who do, they likely didn't get fat in Korea ...
Korean food generally contains a lot of water per calorie. I'm now living (homestay) with a Korean family whose son I know. They continually urge eating and eating, but to me (a thin person) the food is full of water (bap, soup, dubu, etc.) I don't mind that usually, but I like and need a calorie-dense breakfast, at least. Having seaweed soup and steamed rice for breakfast doesn't work for me. |

It's so ridiculously easy to lose weight. People have no will power at all. If I diet for two weeks I'll lose 3kg, no problem. I have a BMI of 22. I'm 30 years old. People are just sooo weak. |

i got super skinny here lol
went from a solid 215 pounds to a super skinny 180
i'm six foot 2
i'm back up to 185 through more weight lifting and it feels good =)
size 105 shirt and size 32 pants is good!
was size 110 and size 34 when i first got here and it was pretty hard to shop for clothes. pretty much went shopping only back in canada
it's hard to lose weight here cuz if you get only one serving, you get hungry. if you get two servings that's too much
kinda messed up haha
to make up for all that, i used to have to eat 3 full meals and a huge protein shake to not be like famished.
after deciding to get skinny (to be sexy) i ate only a salad at night and walked uphill on a treadmill cuz i sucked at doing cardio and i lost 2 inches in pant size and never looked back! |

This really is a case of each to their own. I've met so many slim/buff people who also have really ugly personalities. On a friendship basis, this isnt so bad because I'm not likely to ever look at them in any other light. I also have met many bigger people who have the most wonderful personalities and are really good value. I tend to choose my friends based on their personalities and how they treat me rather than their looks. If having to see other Western people who dont fit your ideal is the biggest issue in your life, perhaps you should find a more suitable hobby because clearly you dont deal very well with people watching whilst drinking coffee in a public environment. |
i love it when people say this crap as a defense for fat people.
ironically enough, i've met many slim buff people with wonderful personalities and are really good value and have met many bigger people who have really ugly personalities.
tldr: being fat doesn't automatically make one pious and being skinny doesn't automatically make one have a bad personality and they have little correlation with one another. |

I'm gonna guess people are fat because they eat too much. |

That is how they compare obesity rates internationally.
There are many more fatties back home, but the percentage of actually obese people in Korea is probably more accurate than that for western nations. There are more people back home who are "obese" from their muscle mass. |

Highly doubt buff guys are skewing the stats of obesity that much, as if every Korean man was a muscle-less bag of bones. "Obesity" is a defined number but the actual science of healthy-fat people on this side and unhealthy-fat people on that side is an educated guess, at best. All definitions aside, no one can argue,t taken as a whole, the American population is significantly fatter and unhealthier than most countries, Korea in particular. |

As a teacher of middle schoolers here for some years, I'll add my personal observation that quite suddenly a startling percentage of Korean kids are ballooning. |

They say obesity rates in United States children are actually down, that is just what I heard.
I think Westereners are usually a little more heavy because we eat more sugar....?? |

It's probably down because children couldn't get any fatter. Sort of like maximum velocity for your belly.
And yeah, go to any American supermarket and what do you see...garbage...just junk food EVERYWHERE. These places are food deserts. It's just oil, sugar, and salt made to look like food. And then there's McDonald's, Wendy's, CocaCola, Twinkies, I mean...it's impossible not to be fat in that environment. |

Every supermarket in the world is filled with junk food. Real food stays on the perimeter of the supermarket and processed food is in the aisles. |
