My Hagwon has completed the visa process for me, but has not purchased my plane ticket yet. Something came up and I need to postpone my plans to leave the states. Of course, I don't expect the school to hold the position for me so I'm wondering how I can get out of the contract. Also, will I be able to find another job or will there be a waiting period?

If you actually have the visa in your passport it should have an expiry date (enter or it dies). This is often 90 days from the date of issue.

This is NOT to be confused with the period of sojourn (1 year).

HOWEVER, as an American, you may have a 1-year multi-entry visa with a 1 year expiry date (not always but often the case).

If so then how does China look to you?
(since you won't be able to apply for a new visa until that one expires and you can't use it with another employer (unless the employer you left in the lurch is willing to give you a LOR and allow you to enter then change employers).

Also be aware that your documents are GONE. Immigration will NOT return them to the employer or to you.

Do you have a visa yet? If you have the visa, then you will have to wait for it to expire. That may be 3 months. If you don't have the visa, your would-be employer could cancel the VIN application. If the application is not cancelled then you can not apply for a new VIN until the original one is used and then the visa cancelled (which would require you to enter Korea) or until the VIN itself expires. If you have a new set of documents ready then one option is to travel to Korea and then do a visa run to Japan for the E2 visa after you find a new job.

A similar situation happened to my husband and I, we got a visa with one school and they went under two weeks before we were supposed to leave. We ended up with another school in time, but ended up having to go to Japan on a visa run. So it is possible to come to Korea with one visa, then go to Japan and get another if necessary. I am not sure if the first school provided us with a letter of release, but it is doubtful, as they were completely unorganized and stuff by the end.
