|
|
Hi folks,
Long story short, I'm looking to head back to Seoul asap. Have emailed a ton of agencies in response to their ads on eslcafe.com
1. I'm a certified elementary teacher
2. I have 2 years experience in Korea (came back home a few months ago)
3. I have 2 great references from my time in Korea and references from Ireland too.
But not a peep. Nobody is even replying to my emails. I find it very strange. I have applied for a variety of locations and only replied to actual job advertisements. None of my emails were speculative.
The thing is, the recruiters have posted the same ads a few times and I'm emailing them a second time saying, "I told you I wanted to apply for the job in Mapo Gu/whatever Gu" and yet they're not even responding.
Why are they posting jobs several times but not even acknowledging my emails? Is it a ploy to get people's details in order to offer them positons outside of Seoul and the other popular areas?
Or has the job market just dried up completely?
I'm confused to be honest. |

Hundreds of teachers are going to be let go in February and you think employers are tripping over themselves to hire someone on the other side of the world? |

The part in bold could be part of the problem. But are you female? (Most certified elementary teachers are.) If so, I think if you hold out and are patient, you will be able to get something eventually.
From most preferred to least preferred:
Female from the United States
Female from Canada
Female from England
Female from Australia
Female from New Zealand
Female from Ireland
Female from South Africa
Male from the United States
Male from Canada
Male from England
Male from Australia
Male from New Zealand
Male from Ireland
Male from South Africa |

Which hundreds of teachers? Being let go from where?
And if you read my post properly you'd have seen that these same recruiting companies are posting the same ads several times on succession. |

They want a female from the United States. You're not that. |

Hey WT, yeah I understand there's a preference for Americans. Not sure I'd place Australians above us Irish though. They're accent is strong.
My main point is that I've previous to compare to. Last time I had recruiting agencies begging me to take their offers.
Guess things have dried up substantially. Oh well, I'll just keep on trying and see what happens. |

The market has changed.

What I have been experiencing now definitely does not match up with what I experienced when I first applied to jobs in spring 2012. Back then, I gave my picture and resume to two recruiters and instantly had three interviews. The day following, I had a job.
Now, I send out my picture and resume and can't even get one interview with anyone. |

SMOE cut all high school and middle school jobs, but kept elementary in 2011. The plan was to eliminate all foreigner teachers there by 2014, but elementary still remains as of now.
GEPIK just cut 50% of all positions. Many elementary jobs were cut.
EPIK is cutting middle and high school all over the place. (It is a very recent development.) Also, the number of elementary positions is shrinking, as NETs are being increasingly assigned to multiple schools.

Less money is being pumped into English education.
The percentage of students receiving private education for math now exceeds the percentage of those receiving private education for English. (Until recently, that was not the case.) |

I presume with Seoul being more popular that things will tighten there more than in other cities.
Or will it be just as difficult finding work in other cities such as Busan, Daegu etc?
If not, which cities would you folk recommend? |

From my experience, if you are out of the country your opportunities are limited. I have had no problems getting job offers when I am in the country, but when I was out of it, I got little to no response |

3. Jeju
4. Bundang
5. Ulsan
6 Yongin
7. Suwon

11 Changwon
12 Seongnam
13 Goyang
14 Bucheon
