Does anyone know if there is a minimum amount of break time I'm legally entitled to if working 9:30-6? Thanks.

You should get about 1 hour break for your own use. This is irregardless of teaching time. Typically the 10 or 5 minute breaks in between should not count.

This is the problem with some Kindy schools is the teacher is expect to stick around and babysit.

Labor Standards Act
Quote:
Article 54 (Recess)

(1) An employer shall allow workers a recess of not less than thirty minutes if working for four hours or a recess of not less than one hour if working for eight hours, during work hours.

(2) Recess hours may be freely used by workers.

In fact, those 10 or 15 minutes between classes CAN'T count as a break. Plenty of employers have (and likely still do) try to give employees short breaks but it's been challenged at the labor board and in court. You have to get that break time in half hour units (or longer). So the OP's boss could give him 2 half hour breaks or 1 whole hour break but he can't give him a 45 min and a 15 min break.

On a related topic... the breaks have to be scheduled in advance. The boss can't just say "We have nothing to do right now. Take your half hour break now." That's probably not very relevant at a school but it's good to know.
